With all the madness of people applying I thought you all would appreciate a good joke.
I'm watching an old episode of catfish, because it's the summer before MS1 and I want to rot my brain as much as possible.
The girl is a nursing student, and her catfish is a model "taking classes online to be an anesthesiologist."
I'm dying right now.
Who wants to go to school with him? 😉

I was just watching that same episode and I was cracking up! On one hand I understand that not everyone understands the process of becoming a physician, on the other I feel like that girl was just refusing to see reality. Boy did she have a surprise waiting for her when she met the *guy*.

She was definitely not in reality. The first time I heard that voice I knew the lie. I know the general public may not have a very good idea of becoming a physician, but I feel like a nursing student should have some idea that you can't become a doctor online...

It's a tv show about online dating and you learn that pretty much everyone lies about who they are

Wait, is this the one with some dude who follows people as they date online? I think I've seen snippets of this. What did the girl find behind the "anesthesiologist" then?

That it was some 18 year old girl who was lonely. Not a male model or studying medicine.
This blows my mind.
I doubt any of them are going to become anesthesiologists 😉

Maybe you can get a worthless paper saying your an MD online...but you won't be getting a job as an anesthesiologist in the US! That show is crazy to me! One because these people *fall in love* with people they have never met. But also, why lie about your looks/gender/job? If they actually want a chance of it working out you would think they would be honest!! Or at least don't ever agree to meet in person! I mean why did that girl pretending to be a dude allow the meet when she knew it was all a lie?!

There are some human behaviors you just can't explain.

I doubt any of them will become doctors period, at least in the sense of being licensed to practice.

That being said, strange things do happen.

Id bet It's not about ever actually working as a doctor. It's about being able to tell people (parents?) you are in med school and then later making people call you Dr XYZ, or XYZ, MD. To some people it's like posing in front of the Ferrari you don't own. Not everyone in this world can accomplish great things but some can get some mileage from the perception of accomplishment.

You obviously weren't brought up reading cyrano de Bergerac or hunchback of notre dame or even beauty and the beast. The basis of all those stories is that love is blind and even the most hideous person can end up with an attractive mate if you can get them to fall in love with your words. This concept predates the internet by hundreds of years. Doesn't work as well in real life though, particularly with the superficial MTV generation. You'll never see the episode where the person says, "I don't care what you look like, I've fallen in love with your words." -- at least not once the cameras leave and it's ok for them to become shallow again. but that's what the scammer is presumably shooting for.

Truth of the matter, and the point missed in the show, is that the ones doing the scamming tend to be far less screwed up than the ones falling hook, line and sinker. Eg We all can understand why a hideous looking person might be lying about their looks. We should have a harder time understanding why the more attractive person seeking them out was so ready to fall for the scam. The show should start pairing up the victims maybe.

See I understand that these people are hoping "love is blind", but in this episode a girl was pretending to be a guy. Regardless of her hopes I doubt she is going to convince a straight person to become bisexual or gay from their words! Some of the other episodes I can definitely understand, where homely people pretend to be supermodels...that is a bit less crazy in my eyes.
