Trolling through old threads, it seems like the consensus is that a strong CBSE score can compensate for a not-so-strong rank. I'm assuming that even with a strong score (75+, 80+) there's gotta be a point where your rank puts you SOL (top 50%? Below top 50%?)

Does anyone have know/have any experience with this?

I doubt anyone could confidently say much more than the lower the rank, the less the score compensates. Even if some programs have some specific algorithm, it’s probably pretty different at every program. I’d love to hear if anyone had more insight than that, but I’d be fairly surprised if any insight was significantly generalizable.

CBSE >> rank. Lower the rank, the higher the CBSE score must be to compensate. If your CBSE is >80, you could have committed murder and no one would care. As time progresses, the CBSE is being weighed much more heavily than rank as it is STANDARDIZED.

This is based on personal experience and from viewing program directors tossing out applications when CBSE scores <60. This test sucks but it’s fair if you’re determined.

Both are important, but yes if you are applying to 6 yr programs with heavy ties to med school, CBSE will weigh heavier. Simply, they want proof you can pass med school exams and the Steps.
