So I just took this test and barely got a passing 3 digit score. Our school suggests we take it so they can help us come up with a study plan. Has anyone taken this thing and done much better on the real step I? I guess I need a little reassurance.

I haven't taken it, or step 1 yet. But, from everything I have heard from people on this forum and some older friends, they said it's a darn close correlation. Most everyone I have talked to said they did better on the real thing, but not by much; it's the closest correlation you can find. So, take this as a HUGE motivator and study your a$$ off. You still have time to review. Good luck.

Did these people take it before or after they started studying for step I? I plan on studying pretty hard, but I won't be starting for a few more weeks.

Most people take one of them a couple weeks before the exam (so after studying pretty intensely), and then the 2nd one few days before. I mean the whole point of the test is to see where you stand and gauge your areas of strength and weaknesses, so you can spend adequate time in the final weeks before the test.

So, all in all--most people take it well after they've been into studying.
