Hi Everyone,

Thanks for having me on the boards! If possible, I'd like to get a little feedback on my situation from a few extra sets of eyes.

My undergrad GPA is 2.89 and I received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering form UC Irvine back in 2005.

Due to severe financial and time constraints, I've been unable to to enroll at a University to complete my premed prerequisites (post-bac) and am currently attending a community college. I understand some schools frown on this, but it's all I've got.

I'm finished with my premed requirements and am taking a few extra courses to for a little extra GPA enhancement. I finished with prereqs a 4.0 and got a 32 on the MCAT. My GPA is currently 3.18.

I'm currently looking at various SMPs not only for additional GPA enhancement, but to also present some recent rigorous University work for the ADCOMS to look at. The goal with this is to also help alleviate any notions that my CC coursework was less rigorous than that of a 4 year.

I'm mostly concerned with how the various SMP programs might view my CC coursework considering it was done post-bac and at a CC institution. Although many programs openly state CC courses are "acceptable", who knows how they make decisions behind the scenes?

Does anyone have any firsthand experience with this?

I'm hoping the MCAT combined with the good GPA jump will keep me in the running.

Thanks so much.

No first hand experience, but since you'll see people going directly from all community college courses to an MD/DO program, the SMP should be attainable.

The point should be made that not many people go straight from CC to MD/DO....

Some schools require a bachelors degree, and some require 3yrs of schooling at an accredited institution; a CC can offer neither of these.

Seen as you have a bachelors however, I think CC wouldnt be a problem. I do however think it will do you no favours in the application game as I do believe they weigh against it in admissions decisions.

I would try applying to VCU's Certificate Program. It's not as difficult to enter as other SMP programs and has taken people in the past with GPA's below 3.0.
