They are pretty well attended, although it can depend on who is lecturing. Certainly you are expected to be there the majority of the time. However, no one at UIC ever said anything to us about missing one here or there - if you have somewhere to be, there isn't anyone looking over your shoulder to make sure you don't miss any. By my third year in residency I was definitely not attending all the lectures, but I'm lazy.
