I was recently placed on the alternate list for CCOM for the 2009 class. I was just wondering if anybody knew what the chances were of getting into the school from the alternate list. I really want to attend CCOM badly, so anybody who has been in this situation before and has gotten accepted from the waitlist, specifically to CCOM, what did you do and what should I do to increase my chances? Good luck everyone.

I was put on the alternate list also but I just recently took myself off because I had already been accepted to my top choice which was KCOM. Hopefully my removing myself from the pool has increased your chances. Good luck.

i've been waitlisted at my state allopathic school, and have been accepted to dmu and ccom. i really enjoyed my experience at dmu and plan to matriculate if not accepted to the md program (my reasons for wanting to go md are purely financial and geographical). my suggestion (and this is what i'm doing) would be to write a letter of intent, describing your reasons for wanting to attend ccom. make this personal. write the dean, the director of admissions, etc. if you feel comfortable, call the dean. as it gets later in the spring, send more material (ie grades, updated cv, additional recs, etc.) anything to show your genuine interest. i'll bet your persistence will pay off.

good luck.

Hey Steth,
My friend was also waitlisted, but she was waitlisted in September, before an offer for an interview. They told her that in May she will find out something.

I hope you hear something soon and we can welcome you to the class of 09!

If I get pulled off Penn State's or UK's waitlist, my spot becomes available.

Hey, for those that replied, thanks for all of the input. The information is really helpful and thanks to all of those who call and notify schools if you do not intend to go there as that really helps the people on the wait-list. Also, for those people who were in the situation where you had to choose between KCOM and CCOM, why did you decide one school over the other and if you could just give more information as to why you made that choice. For instance, why you chose KCOM or why you chose CCOM? Thank you.

I chose KCOM over CCOM first and foremost for basically my gut instinct. When I went to KCOM, I felt more welcome then I did at CCOM. I really felt comfortable with the interviewers and they made me feel relaxed. They were the kind of people I feel that I could go to all the time if I had questions in class. I did not get that same feeling at CCOM. The other reason that I chose KCOM over CCOM was because CCOM is in the middle of transitioning and I did not want to enter into a class where they were in the middle of trying to work out some kinks. If you all don't know right now, let me explain what I mean. CCOM use to have all classroom based textbook type learning in their first two years and not expose the students to any clinical based learning until their 3rd and 4th year. Supposedly the COMLEX board exam I used to be all just questions over things you would find directly in a text book and they excluded all clinical questions until the 2nd exam. Well, I guess last year, the boards were changed without them notifying the schools and they started to include clinical questions. Since CCOM did not teach clinicals in their first two years, consequently, CCOM's first year boards passing rate dropped last year. When I interviewed there, I asked them what they were doing about this drop in passing rate and they said that they are revamping their schedule around to start to include some clinical based learning. I asked the students how they felt about them messing with their schedules and they were not all that enthused about it. I quote one girl as saying "I use to love it here until they started messing with my schedule but hopefully they will have it fixed when you guys come next year, HOPEFULLY" I did not like this saying one bit. The schools are almost equal in comparison and if I had been applying a couple of years down the road instead of now, I may have given CCOM better consideration but I don't want to be a guinea pig for a school, I would rather go to a school that has their schedule well established and since KCOM already taught clinicals in their first 2 years, they didn't need to rearrange their schedule to adjust for the new COMLEX test. So that is my overall opinion. Hope that helps you make a decision.
