Hey guys this is what I have to work with right now, keep in mind I do have one more semester of undergrad left. My GPA has been up and down throughout college and last semester I hit a pretty big bump by getting a D in my genetics class. I am already retaking it and am fairly certain I will get an A this semester. In general there has been a downward trend in GPA since freshman year, but I am working really hard right now to secure a 4.0 this spring.

I am a Ky resident, therefore I am really interested in UK and UofL (both pretty good schools). Looking to apply early summer. There are other schools I am considering as well. Heres some more background.

BIO Major
40+ hours shadowing (Cardiologist/Surgeon/Orthopedic)
1.5 years of research
EMT certified (currently looking for job)
Tutor for Chemistry 1.5 years
Mission Trip to Haiti (Worked with elderly in clinic gathering basic health information as well as taking blood samples)

I know I lacking in the volunteer and hospital experience, but I am hoping to get a job at the local hospital in the near future.

Also just wanted to throw in that I was considering joining the Navy as a corpsman for a few years and then applying for medical school. This has always interested me so if anyone has info or experience with the subject shoot me a PM.

Thanks

The fact that you live in a state like Kentucky where in-state applicants are HEAVILY favored gives yourself a good opportunity to get into one of the two state schools. Both UK and U of L interviewed over half of the in-state applicants that applied, so that gives yourself a decent chance. Your grades fall in the range of accepted GPA of applicants, so that's a good sign, but I think you want to do everything you can to pull up that GPA has high as possible. Keep working hard and I think you'll give yourself a chance somewhere in-state, and if not in-state then there are some out of state private universities that would probably give you good consideration.

You definitely should throw in some hospital volunteering, and if you can get involved in research that would be great too. Your EMT certification sounds great, and it would be a big plus if you could find some work and get some real life experience in the field.

Don't beat yourself up over genetics, especially since you've made such a huge turn around and done way better the second time around. I avoided the biology major like the plague because of the genetics course alone.

Best of luck to you.

If you are unwilling to include some DO schools on your application list, you might consider spending another year in school to establish a strong, consistent upward grade trend that would give adcomms more confidence that you'll be able to perform well in their curriculum. This would also give you the time to get closer to the average for clinical experience that applicants list of 1.5 years. Your Haiti experience helps, but being international should not stand alone if you want to atttend a US med school. Some regular local nonmedical community service would be nice to get in as well, to further strengthen your application.

Your 1.5 years of research is above average, 40 shadowing hours is a bit below average (it would be great if you could follow a primary care doc for 10 hours or so, also), and the teaching is terrific.

What county/city are you from in Kentucky? This MAKES a huge difference.

Most of eastern KY is considered medically disadvantaged. Also, a few western and central counties are in that group. Google it, because noting that you are from a disadvantaged county will appeal to in state schools. (fellow KY app!)
