I've heard rumors that students at Penn sometimes have difficulty with obtaining chairs. Are there any current students who can talk about this?

I interviewed at Penn and definitely got the impression that there are not enough chairs. It sounded like in your third year is where you feel it the most and lack access. I would like to share though that apparently the renovations that will be occurring at Penn in the clinics have been delayed and will most likely be taking place during our (c/o 2014) senior year. So what does this mean? well they don't know but there will be even less chairs and the Corky said they will mostly have to cut the requirements for that year (this doesn't sound too good to me). So just something to think about when making your decision.

Thank you for that information, gatorpredent. I'm a bit confused as to why so many people want to go to Penn if this is such a big problem? Afterall, we are there to learn dentistry and if we don't have the chairs to do so, why go to that school?

Because about 40 out of 117 students from Penn specialize each year.

Like you mentioned, a lot of people do go to Penn. and honestly, they wouldn't go if it was nearly as bad as a few people on here make it out to be. i am myself planning to go to Penn and would love to hear thoughts on 3rd or 4th year students who are currently attending Penn right now.

The students that I have talked at Penn all said that the chair situation was fine as long as you are on top of things. I think being on top of things is not a bad thing to have during dental school.
to gatorpredent: why is there going to be less chairs?

I'm deciding between Penn, Maryland, and Michigan right now and the ivy league name really grabs my attention, but I just worry about this chair situation. I talked to a few students at both Maryland and Michigan and they had no problems with chair accessibility at all. However, everything else about Penn seems top-notch so its going to be a very tough choice, especially considering the fact that all three cost about the same for me.

They are going to be renovating the clinics. It was said that they would be done before we (class of 2014) would get in the clinics but now it has been postponed. Problem with that is that it is now supposed to occur during 2014's senior year. Well if the are replacing/working on some of the clinic/chairs while the clinic is operating = less chairs for seniors. It doesn't sound good to me (this is all what i was told the Admissions lady Corky said) because they haven't encountered this before and the most likely solution is cutting requirements (according to Corky). I don't know if thats good, it could lead to cutting your education short.

I don't remember Corky saying anything about cutting requirements or decreasing number of chairs.
