I'm aplpying to med/peds and I've noticed about half the programs I want to apply to require lor from the chairman's of both IM and peds. I haven't worked or even talked to these chairmen. I've emailed them and they have both agreed to write lor for me, but it just seems silly that people who don't even know me have to write letters for me. Does anyone else have this problem?
I'm also getting 2 other lor from people who have worked very closely with me, so hopefully it will balance the others. However some programs only want 3 lor so then 2 of them would be from people who don't know me as well 🙁

Almost everyone who needs a chair letter is in the same boat. Don't sweat it.

most chairman expect to be asked even if they don't know the person.

If there is someone you worked with closely in either department I would request them to speak to the chair on your behalf (do this tactfully) - this can help out and makes the letter sound more personal.

Help those beneath you by telling them now so they can go out of their way to get some kind of contact with the chair!
