Hi all,
I'm having some trouble with these essay topics for secondaries. I've been fortunate enough to have a relatively stable life. I wanted to see if you thought the following scenarios were ok for the challenge/ failure essays. Also it seems like I won't be able to write about the same situation for the failure and for the challenge essay which I'm alright with but I wanted to see how you guys felt about the following two topics:
1) Describe a time or situation where you have been unsuccessful or failed.
* I wanted to talk about how I tried to get involved with student government in my first year at university. I failed twice but I persisted and eventually became full voting member on council.
2) Describe a challenge you faced and how you dealt with it.
* In my second year my apartment on campus flooded and I was unable to stay there for six months. Fortunately, my family lived about 100 km away from my university so I was able to stay there. But this meant driving about 3.5-4 hours total each day for classes (20 hrs week). I had to learn how to balance my extracurriculars and manage my time. I also had to learn how to study more effectively. Ultimately and somewhat surprsingly, I ended up doing slightly better in my classes during the semester when I drove back and forth than when I stayed on campus.
Alternatively for the challenge essay, I thought I could talk about the various challenges we faced as immigrants where I could focus on a few anecdotal examples.
Are these appropriate or do you feel that they would be weak topics?
