Hey guys, this is for my girlfriend. She will be taking the September MCAT and was going to apply next round. However, we got thinking, maybe she could apply to a few schools this round just to see what happens. Where would she stand?

GPA: 3.32 SGPA 3.2

MCAT? (What would be an MCAT to make this application possible. Lets say a 32)

Degree- B.A. in Psychology from UCSD (she is actually a human Bio major, but is changing it)

Clinical Volunteering-150 hrs

Cognitive Science Research- 1 year

Shadowing- 50 hours shadowing multiple doctors IN INDIA (they were also not D.O)

Leader/Facilitator of Sunday School 1 yr

Leader-sunday school camp for the summer

Volunteer at a under served middle school teaching science- 3 times a Quarter 5 hrs each day for 3 quarters

Chess Club- 2 quarters

We both raised 300 ish cans of food to donate

Where does she stand. She is fully prepared to apply again next year, she just wants to know if it is worth it at all to apply this year

I'd say it may be a waste of money since by the time she gets her scores in it would be kind of late in the game, and by the time her app processes it will be super late... She should focus on raising her gpa by taking a few retakes perhaps at a CC? and putting together a great PS, and trying to shadow a D.O in the US while waiting to apply next summer. Then next summer she will have an early app and have a good chance (depending on mcat)

I was thinking a mcat of a 32 could make up for being late as her stats seem on par for D.O.

But yeah she is more than ready to apply next year, we just thought about it as a small chance for this year

By the way she is still in school and will be finishing her Junior year now and studyong for the mcat over the summer =]

If you don't mind spending the money go ahead and do it. If she can get a 30+ she might be good even late in the game.

Are there any classes she can retake? She could raise her gpa for next cycle with grade forgiveness. As she taken any retakes at all? If so, her gpa's could be higher than what you have listed if the second grade is substantially higher than the first attempt.

Btw would these LOR work for D.O.

No she never really failed or did terrible in courses, her average is mostly B+

Her GPA is going up though (switching major to psych). She does a lot better in those classes and will probably get A's and A-'s for the rest of them. Her gpa could be a 3.5ish gpa and 3.2 sgpa by next year.

But yeah, She knows she'd be a better applicant next year, but she thinks it would be cool to be able to apply this year even if the chances are lower

Some schools require a DO LOR (there's a spreadsheet floating around with that info). I might be thinking of MD, but some DO also require 2 science/1non-science unless you have a committee packet.

Yeah I know MD requires 2 science 1 non-science, didn't know how D.O. was

another thing to consider, and this is based on personal preference, is the competition of the schools. If she applied with a 3.3ish gpa in june, she may be able to scoot into some of the top tier DO schools whereas if she applies in October, it is less likely. Again this is based on personal preference and if she is aiming for new schools, you are fine. If she is aiming for the better DO schools though, it my behoove her to wait even though she could have some luck. also, if there is one specific school you are REALLY gunning for, wait.

Most DO schools also require 2 science letters although some will substitute a non-science letter if you ask the admissions director. If it were me, and I scored a 32 in September, I'd definitely pick out a few schools that interested me and apply. Even though it's late, a MCAT score that high is going to get the attention of a few DO Adcoms.

Yea, in my experience every school who requires 2science/1nonscience is going to accept something else since I don't have a non-science.

What I do have is:
3 science
1 employer
1 DO

So far every school (MD/DO) I've asked is accepting the third science or the employer letter in lieu of the non-science.

I definitely hear ya, she isn't in an attitude of "Crap it'll suck if I don't get in", more of "it would be cool if I did, but i'm definitely okay with being rejected and applying next cycle".

You don't think with her stats, and a 32 mcat she'd have a chance at good D.O. schools? a 32 I thought would make up for her being late

First part- absolutely. She would have an excellent chance. Her GPA is below average but her mcat would be 6 points above average. Yeah she would have a great chance.

Second part- that is impossible to tell. In october, all the people that applied MD and aren't having any luck and are trying to hammer out that DO app quick. This is speculation but I would guess that average competitive applicant from jun-oct has lower numbers than oct-may simply because now you are competing against 3.5+ and 30+ mcats on average. but she might get lucky. the earlier the better but it isn't my money. also, as a reapplicant, schools are going to want to know what more she did if she didn't get in, so if she isn't keeping on top of her ECs, it could be a very bad thing.
