Hi Folks!

I'm a Thai guy who just finished an MS in Epidemiology and right now I'm working as an RA at a university in southern Thailand. I'm planning to apply for a PhD program in the States next year and I'm hoping that someone could offer me insight into my profile and chance for gaining admission. Anyways, here goes:

Education:

  • B.Sc. in Biology (3.27 GPA)
  • M.Sc. in Tropical Medicine with concentration in Epi (3.69 GPA).
  • B.A. in Spanish (still incomplete, got 36 credits left)
- Got 1 publication from the MSc thesis on maternal and child health, in a journal that doesn't have an impact factor 😛
- It took me 4 years to complete the MS, though (due to 1.5 years of conscription + temp government job)

Relevant Work Experience:

  • 1 year as coordinator for a conflict study project
  • When I apply, I'll probably have some 2 years of RA work exp for a wide variety of topics, including 10 months sojourn in Bangladesh doing grant writing and health service research

LOR's: Probably one from my MS advisor (UMD alum), one from the research unit's head, the 3rd one is undetermined.

Test Scores:

  • GRE: 1390 (600V, 790Q), 5.0 AWA
  • TOEFL: 113 (iBT)...I'll have to retake it again next year, though.

Target programs:

  1. PhD (Global Infectious Disease) at Georgetown (long reach!)
  2. PhD (Epidemiology) at U of Maryland Baltimore
  3. PhD (Epidemiology) at U of Illinois Chicago
  4. PhD (Epidemiology) at SUNY Buffalo

(Except for the obvious #1, am I aiming too high here? Please feel free to suggest others!!)

Statement of Purpose: I'll probably shoot at the idea of doing research in global health to match my MSc background...my boss here is encouraging me to do a thesis on molecular/genetic epidemiology but I haven't touched a lab equipment in 5-6 years ^_^"

Thanks a million in advance for all your help and suggestions!

I don't know anything about the schools you intend to apply to. However, I think you should add UT-Houston in your list. I have no MS degree but still got admission from their PhD Epi Program. 1 advice: contact the professor who has the same interest with your. Otherwise, schools will not accept you. However, it is just my thought 🙂 Good luck to you. Your stats are wonderful, better than me.

Thank you, sir. Cảm ơn bạn, thưa ông!!
