Right now I'm feeling like I don't have a good chance of even getting an interview.

I feel like my GRE score is way too low and my experience isn't diverse enough. Now I'm wondering if I can even be a candidate for an interview....

I wouldn't give up just yet. There are people who have gotten in with less than stellar GRE scores and your GPA is solid.

When is the last date to take the GRE for the schools you are applying to? Some of them have dates all the way into November. If this is the case for your schools then i would put in some time studying and re-take the GRE.

If thats not an option, all is still not lost. Can you do any shadowing or work with a vet this semester? If you continue gaining experience you could always call and update the admissions office later in the term to let them know you've gained more hours/more diversity.

Also you could try applying to schools that count GPA more.

And even if none of that worked, you're still not out of the running. People with 'perfect' stats don't always get in, just like people with 'imperfect' stats aren't always rejected. keep your head up!

I wish my stats were nearly as impressive! I'm sure that you'll have a great chance! Good Luck!:luck:

Right now I'm feeling like I don't have a good chance of even getting an interview. My stats are:

Cum. GPA: 3.94
Science GPA: 3.91
GRE score: 430 (verbal) 710 (quant.)
I had an internship at Sea Life Park, I volunteered at an animal hospital for one summer for 135 hours, which is also my veterinarian supervised experience, I shadowed veterinarians at another clinic for about 70 hours, and I did some volunteering at the local humane society.

You and I have the exact same GRE scores. I am very jealous of your GPA I wish mine was that good. I think you have just as good a chance as any to get an interview. The process is so random and no one can really predict what will happen. GOOD LUCK!!! and don't give up if this is really what you want to do! :luck:

Don't give up, your GPA is very strong! And people have been accepted with lower gre scores as well, you'll probably be in the upper mid 50% range of quant. scores from accepted applicants. You can try taking the test again as well. . .like me.

If you don't get in, just beef up your experience and application for next year, it's all a learning process. One year really does fly by. . .and if it's what you want to do. . .priceless.

Your stats seem pretty good - I would just recommend getting as many hours as possible between now and the interview times (so that you can talk about it then and have them add it to your file).
🙂

I wish I had time to get hours, but I'm taking a full load of classes including entomology, which is a field lab. :[ But I'm going to graduate with 2 degrees: BS in biology and BA in Japanese, hence, the full load of classes. But I will see what I can do. I might be able to get hours after all these supplemental applications are over!

Thanks for letting me know that I'm not alone! Everyone seems to get such good scores. Since it's too late for me to take the test again with school already started, I decided that if I don't get in, I'm going to take the test again after fully preparing for it. It was really hard to study when I was doing my internship in Hawaii. :/

Um... why are you worried? Is this just a way of saying 'awww... sad for me... i suck' just so everyone else can say 'no, you're Great, you're awesome!'? because those stats are really good and your experience is sufficient, esp since it is unique.
Don't Worry!!

This must be a joke....
3.94 GPA
Bio and Japanese Major - no one else is going to have that
Internship in Hawaii- Once again I doubt many of us will have that
1140 is not the end of the world
Dont be such a clown 3.94 is more than half the battle

Amen to you.

PS: I think I read that you're from Dallas. I'm from San Antonio! Did you apply to A&M? I didn't. Hick town USA doesn't sound fun.

well, i didn't get in this year...looks like I'm taking a year off to get more experience.

i'm sorry! looking at your stats and experience above i think you were competitive. your gpa is amazing! I got three interviews this year with a verbal score of 420 eek. so we're in the same boat 🙂 i would say get feedback from all of your schools.
I don't know where you applied but there are two schools you should look into.
Illinois--you would most likely pass their phase one because of your insanely high GPA. once you get offered an interview they don't include stats for the acceptance decision. so the GRE wouldnt bring you down. They offered me an interview even with my low verbal GRE, i'm assuming it was because they liked my experiences.

Penn-- i thought for sure this school would be impossible for me. However, they REALLY look at your WHOLE application! i got an interview and they gave me a chance to defend my verbal GRE score. however, i have an avg GPA and your GPA is rock solid so i'm sure the low GRE wouldnt be a problem for them because they know you did well in your classes. They also take into accuont your experiences and since you have some really cool ones (hawaii and sea life park) that is on your side.

Apart from that, i would ask them about your personal statement (to see if it was ok or if you need to rewrite it).

Just remember, this process is still semi random. Your application seems pretty developed to me so just try to improve the stuff you can. IMO, you have it a littler easier. it is MUCH harder to increase your gpa than to just get additional experiences or rewrite an essay.
Good luck next year and don't give up!! 🙂

I have similar verbal GRE scores and my GPA isn't as high as yours and I've gotten an interview at every school I applied to (7 schools). So keep your head up! It can happen!

I got three interviews this year with a verbal score of 420 eek.

I read the "420 eek," and i thought you were telling her to stop toking it up before interviews. I think I've been browsing through craigslist ads for apt sharing in colorado too much. everyone wants to be 420 friendly over there it seems.

yeah a lot of schools just look at GPA and focus much more on quantitative (which you have a competitive score in) for interviews

I also did not have very diverse experience ... all of it was small animal at around 250 hrs plus some research.

my GRE was 780 q/ 530 v and my gpa was 3.92, so not too different from yours.

I got 4 interviews out 4 applications. so I honestly think you are fine! (just for your sake, I applied to mizzou, kstate, miss st. and my IS okla st.)

EDIT: didn't realize how old the original post was, and that was what I was replying to. well akina I'm so so sorry you didn't get in this year! but yes just practice those stupid vocab words and get some experience. but I recommend you apply to some of the schools I applied to next time... (plus they are just awesome schools!)

LOL!!! this is so funny. if my identity wasn't exposed so much on SDN i would have a longer response

I also applied to Texas A&M (IS), Illinois, Wisconsin, Miss. State, and Colorado. I was rejected by my IS and not even waitlisted, so the chance of me getting into a vet school is very small.

I think my interview at IL was way too short (~10 minutes), so I'm not fully convinced that the interviewers were able to get to know me enough for admission. Colorado rejected me, of course. I'm #140 on the waitlist to Wisconsin, so yeah, not getting into that school.

And for Miss. State, I'm on the waitlist, but I don't know what my position is. They say they go deep into their waitlist, but how long is their list this year?

I guess there's some hope, but based on my perceptions of my interviews, I feel like I failed to impress, so I'm just expecting rejection letters. Just as an insurance, I'm going to apply for grad school and look for jobs/internships that will get me more experience.

Thanks for all the encouragements! I can take this experience to improve next time, and I'll be sure to call the schools for feedback.

The fact that you got that many interviews is definitely a positive thing. That means you passed first muster and you were, in retrospect, pretty close to getting in. Definitely don't give up on Mississippi yet! It still may be your year. 🙂

Also, Texas is sort of notoriously hard to get into in state compared to a lot of other places... I think they look really heavily at grades? It just seems that way to me, I suppose. So don't feel too bad about that one.

Yes do NOT give up on MIssissippi!

they go very far into their waitlist! someone said all but one person was called last year?? I got waitlisted as well there after having, what I thought was an outstanding interview, so don't feel bad!

but I removed myself from the waitlist due to other acceptances, so that's one less possible person called!! good luck!

Just got my letter from IL, I'm waitlisted, but no idea what I'm ranked as.
