Currently a Junior applying this upcoming cycle. I'm unsure where all to apply and as of now I have a school pretty long school list.

My 'stats'
Overall GPA: 3.65
sGPA: ~3.4~3.5

Shadowing: 250 hours from General Dentist, and 30 combined from Orthodontists, Periodontist and Oral Surgeon
Volunteer: Around ~400 hours total and the things I'm involved in have been pretty consistent my whole college career. i.e. Volunteer at Ronald McDonald once a month. Also, I co-founded my own organization on campus and have an executive board position in another along with a part-time job on campus (1o hours a week)

My list:
Michigan
UDM
Marquette
Minnesota
Creighton
Louisville
Kentucky
VCU
Maryland
LECOM
Pitt
MSDOH

Any advice in how many schools to apply for would be appreciated! I'm also aiming for at least a 19AA on my DAT.

Your list is long enough, and I have no quibble with the schools on it. I am curious why you do not list UNC and ECU though. Are you not currently attending UNC? If you can get your DAT AA up to 20-21, you will have a great chance at both of your in-state schools (assuming you are a NC resident).

I am not currently a resident of NC. However, if I was or am able to apply to ECU then I will. I feel obligated to apply to UNC and don't think it is worth it. I have had a few people I know apply as out of state students (that went to UNC as undergrads) and every single one get rejected. In addition, they told me if they could apply again they would have somewhere else. Obviously, people get rejected from schools and I know this shouldn't deter my decision, but I think the odds are stacked up against me in this case. (i.e. 1000+ OOS applicants, around 75 interviewed, 12~15 accepted).

It wouldn't hurt to try. No chance for ECU though. Residents only.

I think you'll have a good chance so long as you can get a decent score on the DAT. Get it around 20-21 and you should be easy shoe in.

I would drop VCU due to selectivity unless you have connections with school or really desire to go there. Iowa might be a good one to lose as well. Kentucky I think takes primarily Instate students, but I could be wrong I don't remember. I know Louisville takes quite a few more OOS students. As far as Maryland, LECOM, MSDOH, Roseman, and Creighton be sure that you would be willing to move that far away from home. Don't soley base your decisions on statistics, base it on Cost, Location, Reputation, and statistics.

Thank you for the advice! I'll try to adjust my list based on this.

I have one question though: does it matter how many schools I apply to? For instance, does it look negative to apply to more schools (i.e. 7-10 opposed t0 12-14)?

No they can't see that. It's not until April that schools can see if you're accepted and put a deposit down at more than 1 school in which case you have a certain amount of time to declare one over the other/others. Or you could lose all of them.

Most colleges know if you're applying based on statistics, so make sure you email them after you apply stating your reason for applying and the intentions. They like to see this. Example of this is NYU, which is known to accept a lot of people (due to cost) and most people decline after awhile. I didn't get an interview here until I emailed them.

Put every waking hour you have until you take the DAT into studying for it. You can get a 21 AA, no doubt, if you devote all you've got to it. Then you'll have a high likelihood of getting in at many of the schools on your list. Better to put the time in now and be prepared, than wonder if you could have worked harder for it. Good luck!
