You will get as many interviews as you want at most schools I believe. Getting an acceptance will depend on how you perform at your interviews.

You'll probably get interview invites from the majority of the schools you listed...especially if your application is presented in an appealing way (ie: you don't come of as an all numbers kind of person). Just make sure you look at the requirements to see if any of them reject prereq credits from community colleges. Also, bump up your shadowing hours!!!! The majority of your hours should be done with a general dentist. It's good that you've shadowed a couple of specialists already though. Good luck!

Do you think my 2 years at CC would hurt or hinder me in any way? I know some schools don't accept any CC credits, so I avoided those.

You should have a good chance at any of the schools you listed, just make sure you get your shadowing hours up.

I think you should be good with around 100, and I would definitely aim to have them done before your application.

Thanks! Yes, I've been consulting the most recent ADEA handbook and purposefully avoided schools that didn't take any CC creds. (Tufts is a notable school I avoided because they accept 0, unfortunately)

How was the interview at Columbia if I may ask, and why did you ultimately choose Columbia?

Also temple tufts BU and creighton are the most nit picky about CC credits. I think BU allows you to make up pre req credits with advanced level credits.

By advanced level credits, do you mean higher level undergrad science courses or post-bac courses? Thx!

Either one I believe. For example taking physical chem would replace 1 gem chem pre req, etc etc.

No, it may, slightly, but mostly I want to say no. I know schools like Tufts, BU, and Pitt do not accept CC, especially for pre-reqs, but with other schools you should be totally fine.

Make sure the schools you want to apply to are ok with your CC credits. Lots of schools wouldn't even accept my AP Bio credit, even though I had completed upper level bios simply bc I was missing the lab, so make sure you call and check now! I took a gap year and will be attending dental school next year, so if you have questions you can PM me!

What do you mean? My lowest scores were a 2o on RC (it was significantly harder than DAT Bootcamp, on which I was averaging 23 😱) and a 21 on QR.

Fantastic, thank you for your insight Feralis. Columbia & Harvard both are definitely my preferred choices for schools, for the same rationale you had (specializing, great opportunities). Hopefully my app is up to snuff.

Hey SDNers,
Since I'll be applying this summer as early as possible (hopefully 1st batch), I would appreciate all of your experienced thoughts on my chances. My situation is that I took the DAT last August (2016) and ultimately decided to postpone my application until 2017 (taking a gap year). My scores were 22AA, 23TS (26 O-Chem), 28PAT with nothing below 20. I'm a senior with overall GPA of 3.90+, and science GPA of 3.90+.
Other pertinent info:
What are your thoughts regarding my chances at these schools, and should I remove or consider other schools?
- Leadership: academic affairs student rep., senior class rep., science tutor
- ~30 hours job shadowing (I def need more 😕), including family dentist, endodontist, & OMFS
- ~200 volunteer hours
- Worked as a CNA for 1 year
- URM male
- Will have 2 research pubs when I graduate (nothing groundbreaking)
- Will research for 10 weeks in summer (perhaps another pub?)
- Genetics major at a small college
- 1st 2 years of college were at CC (It was hard to turn down the free tuition they offered me), and only science classes I took there were gen bio & gen chem.
- Schools I'm looking at are Iowa, Michigan, Loma Linda, Harvard, Columbia, Penn, UCLA, UCSF, NYU(maybe)
- Have great LORs on the way, including from the professor who I'm currently doing research for
Also, anyone who has been accepted into any of the schools I've listed, would you please comment?

Only gen bio & gen chem, along w/ 1 year of introductory human A&P. When I transferred, I took upper level physiology, along w/ upper level chem & bio courses. What would you say Columbia looks for in a prospective student? Also, fantastic notes!

Have you talked to dental admissions to see if they are ok with you doing some of your Pre-reqs at a community college? Because I know that dental schools want to see that all of your prereqs are done at a 4 year university.
Columbia looks for:
- high dat score
- mildly high science GPA (well it depends where you went to school honestly i bet if you are coming from a "lower ranked university" they want to see a higher GPA than if you are coming from a top 20 ranked university TBH)
- research will help (but like if you never did it by no means you are at a disadvantage)
- have done something quirky

Gotcha. Although I did take a few science courses at CC, I feel as if my TS score shows that I know the material decently well. How would you gauge my DAT scores in light of Columbia's admissions that you've personally experienced ( not your scores, but your classmates for example). I know I'm in line ( somewhat) with their avg. scores, but what do you think? I've been consulting the ADEA handbook and I don't surpass any CC credit limits at any of the schools i've listed.
