Hello everyone!

So I just arrived home from taking my DAT. My scores are the following:

PAT: 20
RC: 19
Bio: 19
GC: 18
Orgo: 18
QR: 15
TS: 18
AA: 17

Now...I am interested in going to Indiana university. I have a BA from IU in psych...undergrad GPA with sciences 3.75. I have an MBA from IU (GPA 4.0) and I also completed dental hygiene school recently (GPA..4.0). I have been working towards this dream for a very long time. Today was my second attempt at the DAT. I know the QR is god awful as I, like everyone else, ran out of time and I had like 8 questions left with 33 seconds so I had to randomly choose an answer based on how it looked which undoubtedly hurt me big time. My family who knows absolutely nothing about this process is encouraging me to apply because they feel I am a strong candidate outside my DAT, but I can't help but hesitate with that QR score. Plus I wouldn't be eligible to take DAT again until October 10th which I feel blows my chances for this cycle right out of the water. I know everyone is considered on an individual basis, but I would really appreciate advice from individuals who actually know the process and what they are talking about. Thank you guys!

The GPA is great, the dental hygiene experience helps a bit, but the DAT score is going to one a serious problem. Potentially not enough to hold you back from schools with lower DAT averages, but enough that you should seriously consider a retake. It may benefit you for later consideration at some schools, and worst case scenario if this cycle doesn't work out you'll be all set for next cycle (assuming you do well). You don't want a weak DAT to undermine a strong GPA, it will make admissions question the difficulty of your curriculum.

How did you do on the DAT the first time, out of curiosity? What ways did you change your study methods the second time around? What resources did you use?

You should apply to many schools if you want to have a chance.
and consider retaking!

Hi. I would definitely retake the DAT if I were you. I think 17 AA is a little too low for what dental schools want. In addition, that QR score is a little too low. I would save the money spent on applications and focus on improving the DAT so you have more options. GPAs look great though

Shouldnt your AA be 18?

Atleast thats what I calculated it to be. 17.8 which rounds

@ Feralis..I understand your reference for undermining in terms of my undergrad work, but no matter what at graduate level the same argument cannot be made as that was much more difficult than any undergrad coursework. Also the first time around I was so blissfully unaware of this community and also the study material. I basically studied with a friend and just used class textbooks! I was so naive...a total night and day difference in terms of what I used to study and how I studied for sure. This time around I used the typical resources recommended on here.

@JrjDDS yes you are correct that was a typo should have read 18 AA. I had literally just walked in the door from my exam and started typing message first thing. My brain is having a difficult time registering that 15. My apologies.

Congratulations! You are not a traditional student and put in a lot of hard work. With your experience and GPA you have an excellent opportunity at getting interviews. Dental schools will take all things into consideration when applying and I am sure they will see what I see, you put in a lot of hard work and would not have a problem excelling in dental school.

Wishing you the very best and your scores are average, not all students score 😱30 on the DAT.

Feel free to message me anytime, I have worked with many students like you through the years.

Take care..Nancy
