Even if that was completely undeserved, you have to understand that the first round of eliminations are purely numbers based. They'll cut all the people with low numbers because those are the easiest folks to cut. Only then will they look at the rest of you, fairly solid, application.
If money is an issue, you may want to actually do post-bac instead of spending a lot on apps or multiple cycles of applications. You may also look into taking classes at a cheaper state school or something like that. If you have a career counselor type, talk to them. They're usually full of ideas!
