Hey,

Just been thinking about where to apply and just wanted your guy's opinion. I've read and learned alot about the osteopathic philosophy, on top of attending an osteopathic summer program for 2 months. I would be applying to OUCOM out of state and it's also my first choice. Stats are GPA is 3.4, MCAT 22 and O, excellent rec. letters, lots of clinical experience and research experience. I've considered retaking the MCATs, what do you guys think? Oh, also minority status will apply...does that really help? Thanks guys!

Chances aren't that great. OU heavily favors instate applicants. Couple that with the fact that your MCAT and GPA are below average...and there you have it.

Minority status is never something you should count on.

No one ever says they have sucky letters of rec.

OUCOM has a summer scholars program for minorities that you can get into if you have a lower gpa and mcat and are a minority (which sounds like you). i think its 6 weeks long and your performance in that program determines whether you will enter as a full med student that fall. i've heard good things about it so i'd look into it.

i had low mcat scores and got in...but i'm an in-state student and had a really high gpa...so that helped me out. look into the summer scholars program if it really is your first choice... it might help you get in. good luck!

I have never heard of that cut off... where did you come up with that?

Retake the MCAT and study a lot until August 20th. Bringing it up even a few points will help a lot I think.

Good luck.

that wasn't true when i was accepted two years ago, and it's still not true look at www.oucom.ohiou.edu my science g.p.a. was dismal, but they agreed that i had good reasons, and my mcat was 11v 8p 10b Q. i know some people with high gpa's and low mcats. i really think the admissions office means it when they say they look beyond grades. whether that's always a good idea or now, i'm not sure, but sometimes students are quite successful despite having had low scores. i could argue the other side too...

From the website's FAQ:
"What are the minimum MCATs and GPAs needed to apply?
We take more than just MCAT scores and GPAs into account when evaluating our applicants, so we don’t have any minimum grade or test score requirements. Competitive applicants typically have at least a 3.4 science GPA and 8s and above on each MCAT subsection."

from what i've seen, minority status will help you a lot at OUCOM. also, the only out-of-staters i know of in my class are minorities.
