I haven't applied or taken the MCAT yet. Planning on doing so in 2013 and apply early that year if things go accordingly. My GPA is at the average on each school's website, but my science GPA falls right below the minimum. (I've had some rough semesters, such as 3 family deaths within a 2 week period, etc... so please don't judge me!!). Therefore, I don't expect to get in my first time applying. I have an interview with DMU since I was a previous summer podiatry program student, but I want them to still be interested in me and not grant me the interview because they have to at this point.

I've heard from an admissions director that 2nd year applicants usually don't have a problem getting accepted into a school. I asked, so what about the 3rd year and so forth? She replied saying that there aren't many 3rd+ year applicants because people usually get into at least a school or give up at that point. I was wondering what everyone's point of view is.

If you haven't even applied the first time yet, why are you already planning for applying your 2nd time? Although you might think you're being realistic, planning for failure is never a good idea. Concentrate on rocking the MCAT and you can very likely get in the 1st time! People have gotten in with low GPA's before. Good luck!

Just being realistic! Not planning on failure because if I get rejected, I'm going to use this opportunity to correct my mistakes and reapply. I just hope I am not one of those individuals who NEVER get in.

Could you clarify what you mean about being below the minimum? Is this based on a number you saw on a school website or is it based on the minimums listed for the 2011 matriculant class? If you look around this forum there's an excel I posted which contains the maxes, mins, and averages of GPA/MCAT/DAT for all the schools for the 2011 matriculant class. If you haven't given it a browse please do so as it may grant you some perspective on stats that have gotten people in the door.

I agree, just rock your MCAT when you take it.
Work your butt off to make up for that below min. GPA and you should be good 🙂
Good Luck!!!

I fall below the average on the science GPA. I really liked the .pdf file that broke everything down for each school, including the min-max GPA accepted. It gives me relief knowing that there are people who have been admitted with lower stats than me, but it makes me wonder how many times they applied until they got in.

I'm not asking what MY chances are, I'm just wondering if schools give 2nd year applicants higher consideration, etc.

I think it's completely senseless you are so sure you won't get in. You need to have a continuous positive attitude to have a successful career in any medical field. You willl probably need to contact schools in regards to 2nd time applicants . I think all the active podiatry posters have gotten in on their first attempt.

the only people i have heard of that got rejected are the ones that applied really late in the cycle like may-ish. So just apply early and you should be fine

With all that you had going on (deaths in family) you did great and the committee will hear about that in your personal statement so they will know what went wrong with grades. But for the record I think your grades are fine and if you apply in Feb/March IMO you will be fine, but what do I know I am pre-Pod as well lol
