Hello guys, I am an IMG applicant with low scores: step 1<210, step 2-22x, currently working as a pathology resident in home country. I will get 1/2 US LORs and maybe 1/2 home LORs. Do you think I have any chances? And which is more important- to have more USCE or pass step 3? My end goal is to become a forensic pathologist and I am trying to find elective but without any success. Thank you in advance.

I’ve been saying this for years. The bar is set low in pathology. Sorry to be a Debbie downer just trying to be brutally honest. You need to pass step 3 and tell programs how you are interested in forensics since not many people go into forensics. That may help you stick out.

Email or even better call forensic pathologists and tell them you are interested. Try to get a paying position. If not work for free if you have to.

There are people who can’t match in Family medicine but get into Pathology. Let that sink in.

Programs would be happy to have a pathology trained resident in their program.

No, I am not.

Then you may not get the spot in the next match. Step 3 and experience in path will help for sure but don't count on that too much.
Also, if I were you I wouldn't advertise my interest in forensics at all.

If you really want forensics and if you have the ability ( with which it seems you may be struggling, I don’t know) and want to be actively recruited by the big FP programs, consider neuro( perhaps only one of the two years and with CNS trauma focus), peds or cardiac fellowship. These folks are the “ intelligencia “ of FP, or were in my day.

Not sure how many FP fellowships sponsor visa. There are probably a handful of them. More USCE (try to get more US LORs) should be a priority over step3 but finish step 3 by December.

And like Iceman24 said, stop talking about forensics for now. Many IMG applicants cite "CSI Miami" as the reason they got interested in Pathology (while they are applying primarily for IM/Peds). PDs see right through that lie! You may be lumped with those candidates even if you have a genuine interest in FP.
