Hello, I am an ECFMG-certified IMG with 2.5 years of ACGME-accredited residency experience from Harvard-affiliated training programs and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. I would like to know what my chances are of matching in a decent PMR program in next year's match, given the following attributes:

PRO's
- ECFMG-certified IMG with 2.5 years of ACGME-accredited residency experience in General Surgery (2 years) and Anesthesia (6 months)
- US Permanent Resident
- MPH, Harvard School of Public Health
- 22 peer-reviewed publications
- 15 national conference presentations
- Letters of Recommendations from clinicians at Harvard-affiliated hospitals
- Healthcare Industry experience (Lifesciences consulting, health tech)

CON's
- Terminated from anesthesia residency program in 2016
- No support from the previous Program Director
- Gap in clinical exposure since 2016

Please let me know if there is anything that I can do to improve my chances in the meantime.

Thank you very much!

Low chance. Termination is a MAJOR red flag. Best chance would be to shadow at a few programs and hope they will look over the termination and rank you high. You might have to go towards the non clinical side. Plenty of opportunities.

This is now your third residency as an IMG? I’m going to have to agree with @PMR2008 on this one. I’d put the probability really close to zero percent.

You’re high risk. All of the other fluff on your resume is not going to dispel that fact. PM&R is just too competitive these days for a program to risk it. There are still a very few IMG friendly programs. I’d target them and hope to get an audition, though I’m not going to lie, I still don’t think that’ll be enough.

Thanks. Could you tell me what programs are considered to be IMG-friendly?

I wrote this about 4-5 years ago in my advice thread in the stickies. Tough to know how things have changed since that time.I got most of my info from FREIDA and perusing program websites.

“ARE FMG STUDENTS COMPETITIVE?
The field is becoming more competitive for FMGs as the competitiveness increases on the whole. But it is becoming a challenge specifically for FMGs. The percentage of FMGs has been dipping yearly and I suspect that number to be below 10% for the first time in a long time. I have only met 3 FMG applicants on the 10 interviews which I attended. I would recommend doing an audition rotation at the more FMG-friendly programs, because you need to find something that will set you apart. According to last year’s stats, the most programs with more than 25% FMG were: UTSW Dallas, SUNY Upstate, Kansas, Case Western, Washington Univ/St. Louis, Colorado, NSLUHS, and SUNY Brooklyn.”
