I had a bad first year of school. I failed the first trimester and took a leave of absence the second trimester before grades came out. THe leave of absence lasted another year.
Since then I got average grades and the first board score. HOw bad was that first year going to hurt me? What residency types will be a stretch?
anyway to explain that first year?

Thanks.

The way to explain it is to tell the truth, albeit in a politically correct way (just as how entertainers are always hospitalized for "exhaustion" rather then drug overdose, anorexia, or suicidal depression).

You must see that your explanation corresponds to that mentioned in your dean's letter or other LORs. Can't have differing stories.

The fact is that it happened and you can't change it now. No residency is a stretch for you on the basis of taking a leave of absence or doing poorly your MS1, AS LONG AS you have rectified the deficiencies and come across as a mature adult willing to face problems and deal with them professionally.
