So my stats aren't exactly stellar, so ideally I would be applying to tons of schools, but because my wife is starting med school in Houston next fall I'm only applying to UT Houston. What are my chances this cycle? Also should I let them know upfront that if I get in I would definitely accept or should I leave that out?
Thanks,

Wow, I'm going to only apply to UT Houston too (next year).
I would go ahead and still be ready to apply next cycle if rejected.

From my "research," UT Houston heavily weighs the interview (which is based on your ECs).

I dunno, your 16 for OC could be a problem since isn't the cutoff usually a 17? So any stellar ECs that could help you get in might be overlooked because of that initial numbers cutoff...

By the way, your GPA is low and your DAT is also low (due to the 2 16's that you have). At other schools, your chance will be very low. But I don't know how Texas Schools select applicants who are Texas residents. I heard that Texas Schools are filled with Texas residents. So, you may have a chance with your mediocre stats.
Ha, thanks for letting me down easy

san antonio and houston do not have cutoffs at 17....

if u really want to go dental school, i suggest applying to all 3 TX schools... its already super competitive and being with your wife is not a good thing (since shes busy with med school).

why waste so much time applying to 1 school if YOUR dream is dentistry. if u do get rejected, u have wasted one year and then have to reapply... which wastes another year... time is money

That's good news for the OP then! I just have friends (Texas residents) who have higher GPAs, higher DAT scores and good ECs who never heard from Houston or even the other Texas schools. But you never know I guess since there's no exact formula for being accepted

It's awesome that u have a back up (your wife's income), but I mean yea I say give it a shot and if you are in state I don't see why you wouldn't get an interview. I'm not giving u false hope either, I've heard of people with 3.2 GPAs with average DATs getting into their state schools (Texas, same case as you)

so go for it brotha, and if u can't get in, just ask your wife for weekly allowances 😀😀

Hmm well lol I had I 20AA 19TS (No section below 18)
3.7 TMDSAS overall GPA
3.65 TMDSAS Science GPA

I never even received an interview from Houston. I got into San Antonio but Houston didn't show me any love haha. I had a lot of EC's as well (400 + hours of community service and leadership positions)

My boyfriend also applied to Texas with a better DAT score than myself and did not get invited for an interview either.

Not saying that you won't hear back, but I felt blessed to be accepted into ONE texas school. I think you need to broaden your horizons. I have plenty of friends with better stats than myself that didn't even get an interview to any Texas schools. Not saying that you won't though, but to be on the safe side I'd even apply out of state....

Exactly! Just because the TX schools take pretty much only TX residents doesn't mean it's not going to be pretty dang competitive to get in. That's not to say you have no chance because people with your stats do get in! Just to be sure though, it could be better to at least apply to the 3 TX schools if anything

Just to explain my stats a little, I had a 3.0 about a year ago, when I finally decided to shoot for dental school and I've been playing catch up ever since. I'm graduating this may, but taking at least one more year of post bac classes to up my gpa as much as possible. I'll probably retake the dat to try to get those 16s up as well.

I think your chances are slim. You appear to have no advantages over even the most average applicant. I understand wanting to be with your wife, it's something I went through when we both applied to grad school, but if dentistry is something you really want, you need to expand your application criteria.

The application has already opened for Texas schools. The fact that you have not already taken your redo DAT and you still have a year of classes to (hopefully) raise your GPA makes me think that you are just going to waste your money this year. It would probably be best to take a year off.

Do you realize what you're askign? Even putting your "less-than-top shelf" academics and stats aside, let's just consider the math. I haven't got specific numbers (I'm sure doc toothache has a spreadsheet with that info), but you are just ONE applicant out of thousands applying to just ONE school out of 62. I think you'll find that your chances of being accepted are probably less than 0.1 percent.

I don't think the odds are in your favor....

I can tell you that I was in a similar situation but better GPA. I applied only to 2 schools that are driving distance. I got accepted to my state school.

Mehh with your stats I would apply to some out of state private schools as well. If you want to be a dentist, you may have to sacrifice a little and live away from your wife.

Awful decision to only apply to one school. Even with insane stats, more than one school should be applied to on account of waiting till next cycle is a ridiculous waste of time if you could get in to a school this cycle. Good luck, hope it all works out!
