Hey everyone,

I hope that I'm posting this in he right area. I was hoping to get some advice from people about my chances of matching into optho. I recently realized I really like this field and I feel like it might be too late. My stats below. Please assume that I have zero preference which optho residency I match into. I would be fine with any community hospital that'll take me. Thanks.

Step 1: 234

Step2: going to take after apps are submitted

Grades during first two years: pass. Everything is P/NP

Third year grades: honors in peds and family med. Everything else pass.
The only options are Fail/pass/honors

School: Very highly ranked. East coast.
Undergrad: very highly ranked.

Research: nothing during med school. First author pub and a few talks during undergrad. I may still have some time to do research. Obviously not enough to publish though.

LOR: 2 strong (optho and peds attending) and 1 solid but not amazing (surgery)

Extracurricular: very involved with community outreach orgs.

Why wouldn't you take step 2ck early and knock it out of the park? I think it would improve your application if you could pull it off.

Good question. I'm not a good test taker and I don't think I'll do any better on it.

honestly your chances are low.

1) Your step 1 is mediocre at best for Optho. You're below the 25th %ile for matched optho applicants

2) You don't have any honors in surgery

3) No optho research

The only thing going for you is your school's pedigree and realistically, if there are other kids from your school applying in the same geographic areas you could get cannibalized out.

Thanks. I appreciate the breakdown. What if I got involved with some cool research during M4?

After ERAS no one will see it. Also, as much as I hate to discourage you, besides your top MD program status, none of your application seems competitive for Optho. I would say that you take a good hard look at subspecialties in IM and see if you like any. Also, consider PM&R if only $$ and lifestyle is important to you.
