Hello, while I am a DDS already (Univ of Maryland 1988), I'm trying to advise a pre-dent student. I suggested a dental hygiene degree as a good background for gaining admission to dental school.

In my career, I never heard of a dental hygienist being turned down for admission. Has anyone else?

Also, do RDH's generally do well in dental school?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Yes, hygienist have been turned down before.

Main two things that matter are GPA/DAT. Make sure the student has a a good GPA/DAT. If those are up to par, chances are not good, whether being a hygienist or not.

Would an RDH potentially enroll a year late because of the classes needed? That would be an important aspect if someone cares about that.

I would recommend a Bio major
