Just got put on hold at Penn State. It was my first choice so I am really bummed. Anyone know anything about hold lists? How many students typically get in after being put on hold, etc? Should I keep my hopes up?

I know several people who got off the "hold list" and received an interview invite. HOwever, there weren't too many of them. My advice to you is to send them a LOI or some type of update. Tell them Penn state is your first choice and that you'll appreciate a chance to interview with them.

Here are some numbers for you in case you're wondering:
Last year,
4178 completed secondary applications
870 invited to interview
400 acceptance

Good luck

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I didn't specify, but I am on hold after already interviewing with them. Have you heard of anyone getting accepted off of this kind of hold list?

ok i am on pre-interview hold at penn state. i sent a letter of interest last week to the admissions committee. do you think i should email the dean too and say i am still interested? (which is no lie!) the letter i got said i don't "need" to send anything else because their decision will not depend on that stuff....but do you think i should anyway??

Yes, I think you should keep your hopes up. Lots of the most-qualified applicants hold multiple acceptances at top schools, so when they give up their extra spots, the waitlists start getting used aplenty. A few years ago, MCW went through their entire waitlist (280! and that was after the original 325 acceptances).
