I know there are a lot of threads like this, but it's worth a shot 🙂.
I'm worried my bad job experience at the shelter will negatively affect me. I am applying to a few CSU's (Fullerton, San Diego, Long Beach, San Bernardino), Portland State, U of Chicago, U of Washington, and U of Illinois Chicago.
- I graduated in December of 2009 from UCLA with a BA in Social Anthropology.
- My GPA just barely goes over the minimum at most programs, 3.02, my last two year GPA is a 3.2, and I finished two quarters early.
- I have one year of volunteer experience in a field directly related to what I want to study (child abuse). It's a weekly commitment and I have excellent references from all supervisors there.
- I worked two months after college in a shelter for teenage prostitutes and let's just say it didn't work out. It was not the right field for me, and I wasn't able to control behaviors as much as they liked, so I was let go during my probationary period.
- I also was fired because of a diagnosed medical condition, epilepsy, they eventually decided I was too much of a liability. I was diagnosed halfway through college and it did negatively affect my grades, though they continued to improve.
- I have only one solid academic reference in social work, and one possible work reference, though this is in administrative assistance.
