Hi, I'm currently a junior at a SUNY college and was wondering how I'm doing so far for a NYC med school. My cgpa is a 3.57 and sgpa 3.56. I'm hoping my Mcat will be at least a 32. I spent a summer volunteering at a med clinic in a hospital and will continue doing so this summer (around 100hrs total by time I finish). I have also TAed a year for general chem. I plan on also TAing for orgo. I will also participate in a summer research program and also do some shadowing (around 50hrs. with multiple physicians). I plan to apply for matriculation during fall 2011 so I can improve my resume before applying. Thanks for the replies in advance.🙂

Will your GPA be higher by the time you apply? It looks like your stats will be close to the mean for the least selective New York med schools. Look at the exact numbers by accessing the sticky at the top of this forum "School Selection spreadsheet." It lists all US MD med schools and their mean stats.

No offense, but your projected ECs are a bit lackluster. I'd work on something with a bit of a Wow! factor to help you stand out. You look like you're doing the bare minimum so you can report an experience in each of the expected categories. The TAing is the exception. And I see no leadership, so far.

Thanks for the reply Mobius. I plan on getting my gpa around 3.7 before applying. Are there any good suggestions for leadership opportunities? I also have around a year before I apply so how should I approach improving my EC's? Thanks. Also, does transferring to two different schools look bad on my application?

I've seen that some people submit 7 transcripts when they apply. Don't worry about attending two different schools.

Read these forums avidly and see what others are doing for extracurriculars to get some ideas. You'll see that some poster have "MDAPPS" under their avatar picture. Click these and you'll see that person's entire application info. I'm glad to hear you'll be applying over a year from now so you'll have plenty of time to develop a solid application. Besides the 100 hours in the hospital clinic, choose some other venue so you'll have a breadth of experience in medicine. Ideally, you'll find some gig you can continue through all of next year at the rate of 3-4 hours/week. Adcomms prefer to see consistency over a long period of time.
