Need help with compiling my DO School list for this cycle. I have a 3.70 cGPA/3.57 sGPA. Scored 19 first time on MCAT and just received new MCAT score and got a 502 (corresponds to 27 on old MCAT?). I also got verified today and am ready to add more schools immediately. What do you think my chances are with these stats? Is it too late to send verified app to schools or still fine? CA resident, non-URM, 1 publication, shadowing experience, research assistant in emergency department, etc. Help on which schools to apply to or avoid would be greatly appreciated!

Your chances are very strong, your GPA and new MCAT score is right on. I would apply to all schools except AZCOM, CCOM, all the Touros (except Touro Nevada you can apply to it), NYIT and Rowan (huge instate bias), PNWU (i think they prefer pacific northwest regions), KYCOM (has a certain bias for the Applachian region), Ohio (huge instate bias), and Michigan (MUCOM.. which has a very high tuition for out of state). That leaves you with a solid 15+ schools!! But APPLY ASAP, its not early anymore. Also I would not apply to BCOM as their seats are full, and you would just be waitlisted or rejected... BUT Send your secondaries the moment you get them!!

Thank you for the help! Very much appreciated.

Just curious why are you suggesting he avoid AZCOM, CCOM and TouroNY and TouroCA and NYIT. Is it because they prefer high MCAT?

Yeah, i feel like the OP will waste money applying to those schools, because AZCOM, CCOM and Touro CA/NY both all have an MCAT average around 30, and they like high MCATS... I said no to NYIT because they prefer instate, its like 70 percent instate

I would not apply to LECOM either because I have heard they have already started filling seats and done a lot of interviews from a friend. Plus, I have heard negative things about the school and think with your stats you could do better

I suspect all schools will average at least a 30.5 MCAT this cycle, with the Touro's cracking 31.

That's an overreaching statement...the average matriculant is only around 27-28 last year. It doesn't jump 2-3 points in one cycle.

Yeah that's wishful thinking. As much as it gets thrown around on here how competative DO is getting it's a little overblown. Maybe 3 schools will have averages that crack 30. An applicant with a 3.0+ GPA and 26+ MCAT has a pretty good chance of landing at least one acceptance. To have an average of 30.5 you have to have a large number of the class well over that and a large number of candidates with those numbers usually get into at least one MD school if they applied smartly. So no, the average might break 28, not 30.5

Is the average even 27-28? There are so many schools with averages from 24-26

Yeah the national DO matriculation average is 27.something. I think the lower schools are balanced out by the higher ones like the Tuoros and Midwesterns. But if you have a 25+ you stand a good chance of an acceptance, if all else is in order, so the average can be a little misleading. Without the 4 higher schools the average would probably be around a lower 26.

Here are some schools not to consider this cycle -
AZCOM/CCOM/Touro NY/ Touro CA- MCAT too low
KCUMB- class will be most likely filled by Christmas
BCOM- seats are already filled
LECOM- seats are almost filled
OSUCOM/OUHCOM/NYIT/Rowan/UNTHSC- huge IS bias (unless you are IS)
MSUCOM - OOS tuition

Oh should I not send in my secondary to LECOM then? My primary is expected to be verified mid November 🙁

And should I not submit to NYIT? I'm a MA resident. 🙁

Those were two of the four DO schools I was planning to apply to

NYIT:

In-State: 70%
Out-of-State: 30%

1. Does the College of Osteopathic Medicine accept out-of-state students? What is the in-state/out-of-state ratio?
Yes, the College of Osteopathic Medicine does accept out-of-state students. Our current in-state to out-of-state ratio is 70/30.

For NYIT, most OOS applicants have significantly higher LizzyM in order to be considered compared to IS applicants. With OP's MCAT score, it is a slimmer shot therefore not recommended.

Edited: But if this is one of the top choices, don't let $ stop you from applying! It's worth the investment in the long run.

You think a mid November OOS app with a 72.5 LizzyM would have a shot?

It definitely has a shot, but the timing of your application coupled with your stats may leave many pondering whether DO was a backup plan for you. How many months/years back does your experience shadowing an osteopath span?

@AnatomyGrey12

I was referring to "all" the schools he listed...CCOM, AZCOM, TouroCA and NY.

I know all those schools were over a 30 average last year (AZCOM may have been high 29 now that I think of it). I know for a fact TouroCA was 30.8 for our incoming class this year. It was 30.4 last year.

It's not unreasonable to think these schools will continue to creep up as they have been doing...

Ah yes I misunderstood, Of those four schools yes it is possible to have an average over 30. They will most likely creep but at smaller and smaller increments I believe. There will come a point where statistically they won't really increase too much more I think, but that's just an opinion.

OP, you can apply to the Touros but those might be a reach.
your cgpa is above their average and mcat below.

If you are super picky and tight on money, I would follow what these folks are saying. If you can afford to spend the money or you have the AACOMAS Fee Waiver I would apply to EVERY medical school in the country. These schools may have biases or high stat averages, but people leak through the system and obtain the unthinkable when applying. Do what you CAN, apply as BROADLY as you can.
