Hello everyone. I'm a first time poster here, and I just had a few questions.

I'm wondering what my chances of getting into an optometry school are? I'm currently a junior at a state university and work with an optometrist, in addition to having another, unrelated job. I started college not really knowing what to go into, and subsequently did horrible my first year (2.0 gpa). After that, I've been steadily getting good grades - semesters of ~3.33, 3.28, and have had a 4.0 for 3 straight semesters while taking organic chemistry I, biochemistry, applied calculus, statistics, genetics, biology, general chemistry, etc. Currently I'm sitting at a ~3.58, and am taking organic II (might end up with a B) as well as other classes. I haven't taken any college-level physics yet, nor have I taken the OAT. I'm wondering what my chances are and if I should start applying for the Fall '09 class?

Thank you for your help and time!

Hey there,

I had an undergrad GPA of 3.4, one year of working at an optometry office on saturdays, and ~3 years working in a research lab unrelated to optometry. I prepared for the OATs for 6 months and did really well (I think it was 380). I applied to 4 schools and got into all.

Looks like you're on a good track, esp with those good undergrad grades you're gettign now. If you keep doing what you're doing, get some good recommendation letters and do well on the OATs, you should be fine.

I am assuming people that post on this server are expecting constructive criticism. Great job on your positive performance, they will definitely take that into huge account. But know that bad GPA will negatively affect your tremendously, regardless of what people say.

I myself, am pretty much a carbon copy of what you just wrote in your blurb.

Do well on your OAT, meaning 350+ on each section, get those consistently on practices, or don't take it till u get those. That will take u far. Apply early. Get good LORs, not from mediocre professors -- ones that achieved something at ur institution, phd's, laureates, etc.

I am a re-applicant and I am having a very very hard time getting interviews. I graduated in summer 2007 with a bs in physiology and i am slowly looking in to some masters programs and my sister is getting married on march 28th which is putting my personal issues in the way a bit. but i am calling schools readily but im actually sick and tired of doing this because tehre is nothing going anywhere with it.

if u have more q's personal message me. im happy to answer.

Uhh, I don't know about that person, but I didn't even do that well on the OAT, and had a 3.65 GPA, which is easily within your reach, and I got into every school I applied to - they were even offering scholarships! The only other factor would probably be extra curriculars/community service and personality. If those are in good standing, you shouldn't have a problem with most optometry schools.

Thank you for your feedback. I'm hoping my first semester grades won't harm me too much.

I don't think your first semester grades will harm you, but you should be prepared to explain to the committee at your interview why you received such poor grades and turn it into a positive learning experience. It might even be beneficial to you, good luck!

at least you have better stats than i did. you have a better chance than i do. i got in because i did a grad degree to counterbalance my low undergrad grades.
