Hey There!

So, I've just submitted my primary and I would really like to get into UPenn or Emory. I would love to hears your opinions.

About me:
MCAT: 34R
PS: 12 BS: 11 V: 11 W: R

Undergrad GPA: 3.66.
BS in Biology

I'm really really really interested in Public Health & Global Health.

I withdrew an entire semester in 2007. What makes my GPA low is that I got a D+ last semester in genetics. I would really like to know your opinion of getting one really BAD grade and your opinion of medically withdrawing fall of sophomore year.

2.5 years of reproductive biology research experience, I'm working on publishing my own work (first author) and I've mentored a High School student for 3 months in the lab. I got two grants that paid for research. One was HHMI the other was Sigma Xi.

-I've been a humanitarian org VP.
-Volunteered abroad
-volunteered in hospital in HS
-Led international service trip
-Shadowed doctor abroad
-shadowed Family MD and Surgeon locally this past summer
-student government senator
-Organic II teaching assistant
-I've been working 15-20 hrs a week throughout undergrad

I'm a likable, social person, so, I should do well in interview.

Thank you so much for your time! 🙂

A lack of recent US-based clinical experience might hurt you (HS experiences are not generally regarded), but the rest of the application looks good, except for the recent D+ in an upper-level science course. One really bad grade won't kill you, but it will be important for you to let schools know you did better this term after fall grades are out (via an update letter), so they'll know the poor grade isn't a part of a trend.

The term when you had a medical withdrawal was long ago and you had a good excuse. Don't worry about it.

Your LizzyM score is low for both the schools you specified, with both your cGPA and MCAT below their median stats for those accepted. Also, your BCPM GPA is near the bottom tenth percentile for those accepted to UPenn. It is .25 higher than Emory's though.

It's OK to apply to reach schools though. And sometimes dreams do come true. You won't know, if you don't try. Your chances will be better at some slightly less selective schools.

If you don't know about the LizzyM score, see the School Selection spreadsheet stickied to the top of this forum. Plug in your numbers.
