Disclaimer: I know I have good stats. Don't hate. I am legitimately interested in this less-discussed factor of medical school.
I am applying next cycle.
MCAT: 14 PS / 11 VR / 14 BS / Q
GPA: currently 3.94c (s is a tad lower). May drop down to 3.85ish, but I highly doubt it.
Volunteering: currently 40 hours in the ER w/ direct patient contact. May do more. Want to find something that feels more useful.
Shadowing: Currently 10 hours with a Priv Prac Heme/Onc. Will do 10+ with VA ER doc. More with a Cardio and a Radio if I can.
Research: Just now starting into research in my undergraduate field (Chemical Engineering) which has implications to energy/resource sustainability and uses biological stuffs. May get an authorship of some sort.
EC's: I have stuff to show I'm a "real person" (that's not the reason I do it; these are things I enjoy!) but no club leadership or significant achievements (like varsity sports or something).
"Leadership": I have done Tutoring and I am currently a TA for first-year biology.
State of Residency: NV
What I'm interested in is two things:
Will my overall lack of research/volunteering/EC, do I have a serious shot at a "top 20" medical school? Is it worth applying to these schools if my goals are primarily to do patient care and secondarily an interest in public health or the business side of medicine (consulting or administration)?
More importantly (the "less discussed part), what are the chances of getting a sizable (full or 3/4) scholarship to a "mid level" (or primary care focused) medical school? Are these based on family income or merit of statistics? My family income is high enough that it would disqualify me from need-based scholarships, but not high enough that my family will actually pay for any of my medical education.
Thank you for your time! I really appreciate it =)
