Hello folks,
What do you suppose my chances are at a DO School at the moment:
This is taken directly from AACOMAS (14 retakes...troubled past and many transfers..from almost 10 years ago)
.......................................(Non-science|Science|Cumulative)
Computer Science............(3.46|3.31|3.41) recent
Computer Science............(2.50|2.65|2.52) older (1999)
Computer Science............(2.43|------|2.43) older (2004)
No Major..........................(2.86|------|2.86) older (2005)
No Major..........................(4.00|------|4.00) older (2006)
No Major..........................(2.83|------|2.83) 2006 - 2008
Engineering......................(------|3.14|3.14) 2007
No Major..........................(4.00|------|4.00) 2008
No Major..........................(------|3.45|3.45) 2010-2012
No Major..........................(------|3.50|3.50) 2010-2012
=======================================
Cumulative.......................(2.86|3.30|2.98)
All mistakes of my past have been worked through and I am really a motivated student now. It's just hard bumping up these numbers! I have almost 245 credit hours.
I have about 12 more hours of science classes coming my way (A+P 2, Genetics, Cell Biology) before the summer cycle opens up. They should all be A's.
Recently, a lower-tier MD program said I would need 18 credit hours of A work to be at their absolute minimum level GPA required for acceptance. 2.8-ish range.
Of course, SMPs are an option also....just hard wading through all the different types. I have called many to see whether the 3.0 GPA is at all flexible. A few have been but for the most part they are not.
Thank you SDN community for any suggestions you may have.
I would suggest taking a few classes to bring your gpa past the 3.0 mark and then apply to a post bac or SMP.
Yes this is pretty much what I was planning. The 14 retakes occurred over a ten year span....but yes they are sadly the big elephant in the room that is hard to ignore.
I was looking at one year SMP options offered at some of the allopathic schools as a way to prove myself....the few DO SMP's I looked at were all 2 years. I would ideally only apply to one year programs.
I don't know where you were looking, but I know for a fact that Western, AZCOM, CCOM, and the Touro programs are all 1 year.
Only reason to go above a 3.0 ion cGPA with an SMP is that you are going to be able to avoid the instant 3.0 cut-off that some schools have. I think in your position an SMP w/linkage makes most sense, but both paths (retake v. smp) can get you where you want.In the DO world, my science GPA (3.30) is looking more competitive. Is it even worth trying to raise my non-science gpa from a 2.86? By continuing with the science courses, the cum GPA should continue to rise, albeit slowly. I have close to 350 hours of total coursework completed at this point and am running out of pertinent science classes to take......pretty much Genetics and Cell Biology and Medical Term would be the last few I am considering taking.
