Hey everyone, I'm new to posting, but have been following along for a while! I'm applying this upcoming cycle and have a Step 1 of 230, mixing of honors/high passes and a bunch of research (1st author IOVS, 2nd author Ophthalmology, and 6 other ophtho pubs and case reports, with several conferences and oral presentations). I think my references are strong and I'm from a mid tier institution. My Step 1 isn't as high as I would have liked, but do you think I have a chance at any top 10 institution?

Thanks!

Is this a rhetorical question? With 8 ophtho publications, you probably have published more than some Assistant Professors. The only thing that you probably lack is CONFIDENCE! Apply away!

I agree, I think you shouldn't be concerned! Tons of publications! I don't know if Step 1 is an issue, but I don't think so!

Even if you had a 270 step 1 and 20 publications, nothing is a guarantee if you need to match at a top 10 program.

Sure you have a shot, but your stats are not that much different than most of the other applicants who will eventually match at top 10 institutions. You should consider away rotations and whether you have any personal connections. A lot of top institutions prefer there own students or students from other top institutions. Its not impossible, but an uphill battle is ahead

I agree with most of the above posts. I would advise anyone hoping to match into a top program the same; don't put your blinders on when you are interviewing at reputable programs. There are a handful of big name programs that just did not have the same strength of clinical training as many other fantastic but not "top 10" programs. Apply broadly, go to as many interviews as possible and be clear about your goals when putting together your rank list. Good Luck!

thanks all for the replies, you guys don't think there's a cut off for ophtho? since 238 was the average last year and my 230..is quite a bit lower??
