Expect a lot of veterans and PTSD in the ER once Obama starts bringing the troops back.

Don't expect the military to acknowledge this in the future either... they dont want to be discharging people based on the PTSD.

PTSD after you finished your six years.... okay.

PTSD before the six years are over... NOT OKAY!

I don't work in the VA, so I can't answer some of your questions, but I do know the military does have several programs in place to prevent suicide and PTSD. That of course will not completely prevent it, just possibly reduce it.

The suicide rate in the military actually was lower than that in the general population until recently.

I have a colleague who is currently deployed "over there" somewhere. He said he was told by his CO on arrival that he was now expecting zero suicides. My colleague just asked if there was going to be anything changing with respect to the 24-hour access to firearms... 🙄 With respect to suicide, he felt that the biggest issue in his base was the immaturity of the young men, along with which comes immature young girlfriends back home who find other boyfriends and send breakup emails, etc... He feels fortunate that due to local sensitivities this is mostly a "dry" war--things would be worse if alcohol were involved.
