Hi,

I didn't match in Neurology this year, but I matched in Psychiatry. I rather prefer Neurology than Psy. How easy is to trasfer from PGY1 in Psych to PGY2 in Neuro. This is my PGY1 in Psych : 4 months IM Inpatient 2 months Neuro Inpatient 6 months adult Psych inpatient.
Thanks for your help 🙂

It will be tough to make this work. The ABPN has this to say about the intern year:

A full year of ACGME-accredited training in internal medicine, or as an acceptable alternative, a full year in an ACGME-accredited program in which a minimum of six months of training must be in internal medicine, the details of which must be documented by the training director. The composition of these six months may NOT include rotations in neurology, family medicine, or emergency medicine. To ensure that these six months constitute a highquality experience, they should emphasize progressive responsibility for the resident. At least two of the additional six months must be spent in internal medicine, pediatrics, and/or emergency medicine. For candidates entering neurology residency training on or after July 1, 2001, at least two of the additional six months must be spent in internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, and/or emergency medicine. No more than two of the remaining four months may be spent in neurology.

Neuro requires 3 months psych now, so if you got everyone working together and talking to the board folks, maybe something could be worked out. Getting those 3 extra psych months to count towards anything might be tough. I don't think they can be neuro "electives" and I'm not sure if they can round out the IM intern year. I really doubt you can avoid starting over, but if your institution - psych, neuro, and IM work together I think there's an outside chance the neuro board would allow something to be worked out. This situation has to have come up before.

I'm trying to be optomistic here but at first glance I'd say it can't happen.

Thanks you all for your reply. I am a little disapointed. I will check with the american board of neurology and psychiatry about the PGY1 and the transfer.
