Hey Guys,

I recently got accepted to a school, and was so enthusiastic that I sent them my $100 deposit to confirm my place in the class, which I assume they've received and all of that.

But now I just got accepted off the waitlist of another school, and I"m wondering if maybe I should be going there instead...I guess I jumped the gun too fast on the other school.

My question is, do you think there would be any trouble if I decided to "withdraw" my place at the first school, then take the acceptance from the other school? I know I"d probably lose my 100 bucks, but that's not really what concerns me. I really need to think about which school I want now, and I really would prefer not to call the first school and say "oh, what if I change my mind after sending you my deposit" until I'd really be sure.

Happens all of the time. You can change your mind and go to the second school. If that's what you want, it's definitely worth the loss of $100.

thanks Dr. Mom. Now I just need to decide...

Can anybody tell me more about U of Wisconsin's "statewide" campus thing? I'd be afraid of getting shipped all over the state when I don't necessarily want to. Is it mandatory to do that?

people often hold multiple acceptances, sometimes until may 15th. so you can accept both acceptances until you know what you want to do for sure. some of the deposits are even refundable.

Something tells me I've been totally misunderstanding the "acceptance" part. So, I can take both acceptances? The 100 bucks I sent the Medical College of Wisconsin isn't officially making me a part of entering class? Now I'm confused...

Yes, you are officially apart of the MCW class. But up until May 15, you can officially be apart of many entering classes. I.e. you can accept and send deposits in for every acceptance you receive.

yes, the 100 bucks does make you part of the entering class, but here's how the system works. Schools are free to offer you admisssion. You are free to accept as many offers as you want. Sending in the required deposit and paperwork "secures" your spot in the class, but it doesn't mean that you are REQUIRED to go there. Up until May 15, you can hold on to as many acceptances as you'd like (assuming you can afford a whole lot of ~$100 deposits. At any point during that timeframe, you may tell one school or another that you do not intend to go. If you pull out, then (depending on where you're at in the process) they will fill the hole with a person straight from the applicant pool, or as in your case, they may invite someone from the waitlist to attend.

ANYWAY, I'm sure I'm being slightly redundant and longwinded, but the point is . . . there's no pressure to make an immediate decision. If you like the other school, send in the paperwork and deposit to secure your spot. Then, between now and May 15, decide which school you want to attend. Although there is no immediate pressure, please do keep in mind that other applicants are waiting for a spot at one school or the other. So give it thorough consideration, but (this is just my opinion) it would probably be courteous to other applicants to make a timely decision.

A lot of schools have a refundable deposit and they expect people to drop their acceptances, so don't worry about being "rude" by pulling out. Hope that helps!

everybody has helped immensly. I'll try not to wait too long to make a decision though...I know what it's like to be waitlisted (though I'm surprised I got accepted off of one after only 3 weeks or so).

Thanks again! 🙂
