I am writing to let you that there have been some recent changes at MLK. As of last week, we have a new chief for our department and a new program director. I agree with most of the previous posts about concerns about MLK but things are changing. We have had a consulting group from UCLA here the past couple of months that have begun positive changes. In addition, we had a conference last month where most of the chiefs and program directors from Southern California came - they all offered to help. We have excellent pathology here and this program could be excellent very soon. It is late in the interview season but you can email our new PD directly if you are interested at [email protected]. Please spread the word to your non Student Doctor reading classmates who might be interested in coming to California.

Are you guys struggling with getting a class in there? I am wondering or was this done just to get the info out. BTW why dont people from MLK have their email addresses at the place? Something like [email protected] or something like that?

I am a current MLK resident and couldn't agree more with the above post. Things are rapidly getting better (espescially with the leadership changes). The pathology of course, as always, is still awesome!

BTW, the lack of email etc is a reflection of the old department administration. A new department web site is currently being put together.

Cool thanks for the info. I was just curious. I hope things get better for you guys out there. I met some of your gads and they are really great EM docs..

glad to see some movement at MLK...it can't help but be one of the riches clinical soups to train in...

The new website will be up in the next couple of weeks hopefully. As with all things in a county system, it is slow to get done. I'm working with the administration, our hospital, and with the medical school to try to get some webspace back. E-mail address will definitely be a priority.

I think the email thing just makes it look more professional. Congrats on the changes..

Don't be fooled. The program is improving but the food in the cafeteria still sucks. Definately not for the weak stomached individual. Still no word on the suggestion for starbucks in the ER. You find them everywhere else, why not? I'll keep you guys posted on the food and beverage situation....

Man.. I spent a chunk of my 3rd and 4th yrs at Cook County.. Seriously I cant imagine worse food. Im a big boy with a healthy appetite and I couldnt eat most of the food. 🙂

The food isn't all that bad, and breakfast is entirely edible. Wishard hospital in Indiana used to have the worst food imaginable. They had this yellow-grey gravy they would put on EVERYTHING, and I still doubt that their "bacon" came from any mammalian species.

Veers r u a CMS grad? I agree breakfast was ok, but crap man, I atre a hot dog there once and I couldnt even finish it. I almost vomited.. YUCK!

Truth is it is hard to screw up bacon, and BOILED eggs..

Sinai is greasier but much better!

CMS? No se.....

hey thanks for the update! i'm starting to do my research on programs now (i'm a third year med student), so i'm definitely looking forward to seeing new info on the website. take it easy. --sp

cook county breakfast is pretty decent, lunch is bearable... it's weekends and dinners that are absolutely horrid. i've got golden thai and jimmy john's on the cell for those occasions!!! but the best thing about CC food is that it is FREE as much as you care/can bear to eat! saves me a bundle (spend it at the bar!!!)

Here's the preliminary website: http://users.adelphia.net/~jonmcgarry/mlked/

Still working on server space. Most of the information is accurate.

What would you need a Starbucks in the ED for? I've been to the Ghetto-bucks across the street several times, and haven't suffered significant injury yet.

Yeah, and it won't hurt much when I have to put in that chest tube to decompress that tension pneumo you get after getting shot getting your double shot half-caf vanilla mocha latte. I say starbucks in the ER it is....

That's okay, we all need the practice. I'll officially give consent for bilateral tubes should my Starbucks run fail.
