So, basically I have only received one interview invite this cycle and the only date they had available is potentially problematic for me. I tried to select other dates online but they were all filled, so I just signed up for the one they had open.

I have an exam the day before my scheduled interview and the day after the interview. While theoretically, I could pull this off, given the fact that this is my only interview there could be some complications that I am worried about. I am traveling to the west coast from the east coast, and given how unpredictable travel and weather conditions are out here, I feel really anxious about leaving right after my exam and possibly encountering some hiccups. Not only could I potentially miss the interview, I could miss my second exam.

I'm in an SMP program right now, where we take the same exams as the med students. Given the fact that many people in my program are applying to get into medical school, many of them have interview invites. The administration for my program refuses to move around any exam dates for students due to interviews based strictly on the fact that they have so many students and it would be impossible to accommodate them all (I actually think it's understandable).

If I finish my exam at 4pm and head straight to the airport, I'm not looking at getting into the west coast any earlier than midnight local time. After picking up the car rental and driving to the hotel (which is about an hour away from the airport), I feel like I'm not putting myself in a good situation to make it to an 8am interview. Again, with the possibility of air traffic delays and weather problems, it could be even later than that (or not at all).

They have one earlier date that I feel like I could juggle. I could potentially leave a day earlier than normal to give myself some time. This is my only interview, and I want to give myself the best chance for doing well. I also don't want to do poorly on my SMP exams because then I will be truly screwed come time to apply again next cycle.

I guess my question is... do I just call the school and explain them my whole situation? I think this would be much easier if there were other available dates and then this would just require someone to change my date, but there are no other dates available on their calendar (everything is full). Would they make an exception? Would it be better to email them vs. calling them? I did a search and looked through some threads but didn't really find much advice.

I'm also partially hesitant because this is really my only opportunity so far (and likely for the whole cycle). I'm just so grateful for this chance, that I just feel uncomfortable asking the people at this school to do me a solid and give me another interview date that is already filled up. I know there is no harm in asking, and the office people likely won't care or have any say in whether I am admitted or not, but I'm not sure how to go about juggling this.

Suggestions?

Ask your teachers if you can take the tests any other time - if you can reschedule it. Otherwise, call the school and ask for another date. I know many people who got a date arranged when they could attend the interview. Don't try juggling both.

Most medical schools are very understanding of these scheduling issues, and it shouldn't be a problem to change your date (as long as you only do it this once). Also, I've found that a "full" interview date does not necessarily mean they cannot find a way to squeeze you in on that date. Just call them, explain your situation briefly and tell them which alternate dates work for you. Good luck!

It doesn't hurt to call them and ask.

Someone applying to KU also had complications and the interview date they were eventually given wasn't even one of the dates listed as a possible option in the e-mail that they sent us. I think it took place either a week before or on the week when decisions (including mine) were mailed out.

Worse case, you'd just have to go with the plans you've already thought out. If that happens, make sure you know your stuff, relax, and have a good time at the interview.

Good luck!
