How many of you osteopathic physicians/residents/students would be interested in participating in an organization that wants to work for change in the osteopathic profession?
Please click here to vote in the poll to let us know if you are interested or not.
This was my reasoning for finding out what issues some of you thought were important. Obviously with all the views, either some of you agreed with the issues or just didn't want to share your views. So to stop beating around the bush, here is the current proposal.
Students, residents, and physicians are frustrated with where osteopathic medicine is heading. Some feel like they have no voice in the important issues at hand. Many members wanted to take action but few really knew how to go about doing that. A few members have suggested creating a place where collective voices can be heard to campaign to organizations on various issues such as the most recent Rocky Vista debacle, the joint match issues, those who are shunned for doing ACGME residencies, etc. in order to promote some standards and improve the status of osteopathic medicine.
The purpose of this organization would not be to circumvent the AOA/SOMA but to maybe create a way to get involved and let collective voices be heard on what appears to be deaf ears to some. The AOA is losing dissatisfied members who are not joining after medical school or have become less active in the organization, which should be an increasing concern. Many are split on their support of our umbrella osteopathic organization and unless there is a way to keep membership strong and unified, osteopathic medicine will have very turbulent times ahead. This is something I know that I would like to avoid and Im sure that many AOA members would like to avoid as well. So how can we try to recapture those members who are dissatisfied with where they see the osteopathic profession?
Currently there has been support secured for a web space for students/residents/physicians to discuss/create as a grassroots organization that would like to campaign for changes. I was wondering what your opinions might be on such an organization. Again, I want to reiterate, the purpose is not to campaign against the AOA but FOR the unification of osteopathic medicine under the AOA. The only way to get this started is if we have the support and help of others.
Ideas were asked in the Osteopathic medical forum of issues for discussion, such as this thread.
