so a friend of mine (no really, a friend of mine, and not I) is interested in switching out of her residency into something else. leaving surgery, entering... ? she's not sure yet.

she's looking to do research for 1-2 years while she figures out her situation, but most programs she has found are more geared towards fellowship level work, i.e. you must be "board eligible", whereas she has only finished (almost) one year of gen surg internship. what types of opportunities should she be looking for, other than directly contacting individuals regarding creating a research position? is there a website or list anyone is aware of that compiles opportunities for research at this level (have an MD, not finished or switching residency)?

sorry for the vague and poor description of the situation. i'm not exactly sure what she's looking for but told her i'd try to dig up some info.

Didn't you post recently about open internal medicine positions and about switching to psych? Or was that somebody else?

that was somebody else. i'm an MS-IV happily applying to anesthesiology positions.

the question is in regards to a friend of mine who is a gen surg intern unhappy about her choice and trying to find options for her upcoming year that involve staying in research/medicine but looking for something other than a fellowship that requires her to be board certified.

IM? ewwwwwww!

Psych? meh. not my bag.

Your friend is actually considered a post-doc at this stage. There are a lot of opportunities in federal organizations like the NIH for her. She should get started right away as deadlines are fast approaching. She should also try to pinpoint what she is interested in as this will help her make a good decision about what area she should work in. I did an internship in gen surg last year and am doing a year of ophthalmology research at Duke University this year. I'll be starting an ophthalmology residency in July '06. She should utilize all of her contacts and maybe set up her own position with an attending she's familiar with.
