Future Anesthesiologists ---

How difficult would it be to apply into an Anesthesiology Residency as a PGY2 in an Internal Medicine Residency?

What do these applicants do the year prior to CA1 when the rest of their colleagues are doing their Internship? Research? Moonlighting?

Also, how competitive do you have to be a land a position in Chicago? USMLE scores? Research? Recommendations?

I greatly appreciate any advice you can provide. I am unhappy right now as an IM resident and regret not applying to Anesthesia last year when I had been considering the field seriously.

Regards.

I am also a IM PGY-2 and am making the switch. It took me a year but I applied through ERAS this year and then followed with an email to all programs stating I was also interested in a CA-1 spot starting in July 2005. 2 got back to me and I recently recieved an offer from a program in Chicago. You can do it but it takes some persistence.

Kron,

I am currently a PGY1, but I will apply next as I would like to buffer my application more, so that I have more options next year.

How did you approach your program director? Were they receptive to helping you with a Letter?

What program in Chicago offered you a position? Where you already a fairly competitive applicant?

Regards.

Interesting topic as I am about to start PGY-1 in IM but have severe doubts that I made the right choice, problem is I only ever did one gas rotation in school - but I did love it. My question would be what route would I have to go to get a spot in Anesthesia from my intern year of IM? Should I re-enter ERAS or should I look for open spots outside the match? This thread is old but I wonder, how difficult it is to swtich into anesthesia?

I applied outside of the match. Work hard during your internship so you can secure strong letters of recomendation. Do not worry about founding. If a program wants you they will find the $$ to fund your training.

Hello,

We dealt with this issue numerous times. Search for threads on this topic. As an example, I posted a few lines in the following threads, where you will finds pros and cons of changing specialties, and many other interesting comments:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=736253

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=730589

and some others, if you care to search.

To summarize those threads, lots of people will discourage you, but I think you should give it a try if you are fully convinced of it.
