Changing specialties

Just a request for advice/input from any who have done this - I have recently left my residency program (I am in the intern year) after careful thought for a number of reasons, and I am considering new specialties. I would like to get some additional exposure beyond what I had in med school to those fields I'm considering changing into during the time I've taken off to rethink things, because I want to be sure of any decision I make this time around. I think the best way to approach this would be just to contact the PDs of any programs I am interested in and talk to them about my situation, but if anyone who has done this has any suggestions about the process and how it might usually work, I'd welcome the advice.
