I am facing a difficult decision to make right now. Cincinnati, a cheaper school, waitlisted me. So both schools that I am considering are University of Charleston and Iowa.

They are both out of state. But Charleston is relatively cheaper.

Charleston is $30k tuition
Iowa is $40k (expensive)

However, Iowa is a well known school and has been established much longer. They have a scholarship program offering $10k if you could maintain a 3.4 gpa. That is IF you can.

I am not sure if it would be a wise move to bury myself in debt. I have already asked the office and they say that you can't become a state residence just by being a first year student. So that's not an option for me.

I don't care about living extravagently after I graduate. As long as I can secure a job, hopefully, and pay off that debt. I am scared because I don't have that much work experience. I have only started my first real job this summer.

I would like to know what you all have to say about this. Thank you.

my opinion is that you should choose the one that is the cheapest since your #1 priority is less debt.

But you also need to be aware of the reality is that there are more and more talks about where you go for school and how it would matter in the future,

I know. new schools they are, though.

It just doesn't make it look good for pharmacy is all I'm saying. My opinion. And clearly other people feel similarly judging by how many preceptors and educators I've heard saying they don't want to precept students from newer schools. I don't want to turn this thread into a new school vs. whatever debate., though. I'm just pointing out recent events and all lumped together, it doesn't look good.

I can only speak for two health systems I have worked for over the past 4 years. We do not take any students for internships from the newish pharmacy school in our state, nor do we interview them for residencies. Our clinical pharmacy team is made up of all pharmacists from established programs in state and out of state, some residency trained and others hired after years of experience. Same goes for my previous hospital as well.

So adjust your game plan according to your priorities, reality, and your guess of what the future is going to be. Safer best would be to go with the more established school.

Iowa is a good school. Can you get in state tuition after one year? That could change your options significantly.

I don't think you can get in state after one year in Iowa. That's what I was told when I applied last year.

I was hoping to get into Cincinnati since it's so cheap and in my hometown but I'll be going to university of charleston

I am debating about rather I should reapply to Cincinnati or not. There's that letter of recommendation to address and I don't know if I will get accepted.

As for Iowa, I estimated the loan to be around 160 - 200k.

Charleston will only be about $112,000 unless you take out the grad plus loan
