Charting Ouctomes for IMGs (2013 data)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but it came out earlier this month.

I'm guessing that ECFMG was willing to share data with NRMP while ERAS was not

Interesting things (that seem to conform to things I've already heard on this forum)
1 - First things first. Average match rate was around 50% and definitely rules out the more competitive residencies. Everything more competitive than EM seems out of reach for IMGs.
2 - The average Step 1 for matching US-IMGs is pretty low (217). Graduating more than 1-2 years ago is bad for prospects (1.7 years avg post grad for matchers, 5.7 post grad for non-matchers)
3 - Most of the people who matched didn't rank more than 1 or 2 programs in a specific specialty (median contiguous rank of 1 or 2), while those who matched seemed to rank at least 4 in the easier specialties (FM/Psych) [exception = Gen Surg at 3 for matchers)
4 - Outside of Pathology (4.1 years), all US-IMG averages for years post-grad were <= 2, while non US-IMG were considerably higher.

That's just the general stuff. I don't care enough to go into each individual specialty.

Take home points - Avoid being an IMG at nearly all costs. Go for US MD/DO even if it takes a year (or possibly two) of post-bac.
