To all residents and EM docs out in private practice: how much time would you say that you actually spend writing in charts/dictating? Having been through my IM rotation as an MS3 I can say with certainty that writing 3 page H&P's and volumes of progress notes gets old REAL fast. Any ideas?

We use the T system. No dictation. I'd say I spend an average of 10 minutes per chart. Just a guess.

It's a template-based documentation system. They have paper or computer versions, as well as patient/information tracking systems for the ED.

I spend 3 1/2-5 minutes dictating an average ED chart. Maybe 1 minute ordering labs. 2-3 minutes doing discharge paper work. It's doable. Internists don't spend 3 pages doing their H&Ps. That's only a medical student thing so keep your head up, it gets better no matter what field you go into.

P.S. All good medical student H&Ps are at least 10 pages.

Ten minutes for orders and documentation per case sounds pretty reasonable; rack another point up in favor of emergency medicine 🙂 .
