Hello folks,

I started this thread to rate the dental schools, considering the total expenditures & tution that will cost us when we are once done with the program.

We can also include the loan amount & how much interest we will be paying for it at the end & normally how long it takes to pay back.
People say that we have to pay 50,000$ as the interest, when we take loan for 200,000$.....Is it true!? :scared:

Hello guys,
After some "search" I found out UOP, USC, UCSF, BU, UPENN, NYU, CWRU are the expensive ones?

What say u guys? 😀 😕
Won't somebody let me know which is cheap & best? (excluding lomalinda, Uni of pitts, & tufts-which requires part2 & uni of illinois)

Cheap and best?? Thats a tough combination! 😀

I have to make a few changes to the Penn section of your post... they've toughened up security on campus (we have 3 police precincts (sp?) within a 10 block radius and we can request for police escort whenever lab work keeps us behind in school late. The 'old tech' part is also not very true... we battle DentSim three times a week. 🙁 But we haven't entered the clincs yet, so I can't really defend my position there 100%. And lastly.. unpredictable? I didn't understand in what context you mention that... I'm guessing its during the selection process. As for the cost factor.. it's squeezed me dry, so no comments! 😀

I would say Nova is relatively cheap and I really liked the school (and the state!), but they're very picky and prefer Florida residents. Good luck on your search! 🙂

THANK U tasha & rajkang for the reply. It always feels really good to see replies(atleast after 340 hits!) 😀

Tasha, regarding the +ves & -ves for each dental school it's really an opinion contributed by dds_fight(sdn member) and it's not me(which shows me as a lazy bum) 😀 . okay do u mind if I ask u, Do u know how much u will be spending for the whole DDS(including living expenses)? & do u have any idea that how long it will take to pay back the loan amount? & have u calculated how much interest amount u will be paying finally?.....Thanks 🙂

Rajkang, Yes I am a dentist in my home country & have 2 yrs of clinical experience. I wish I could join a program which is of short duration & start practicing ASAP, but those schools make it tough by demanding for part2 scores which will cost me one more yr 🙁 . anyways thanks for the input.

Ok guys I am still on the process of calculating the expenses for each dental school, will let u know once I am done with it 😀
It will be really helpfull if the sdn members who r going school/gonna start/who has already done some "research" help me by giving the data
here is the question,
1) DO U KNOW HOW MUCH U R SPENDING FOR THE UR DDS?
THANKS 🙂

For Bu:
Tuition for full program is 80,700
Instruments: $9,164
Total for tuition and instruments is $89,864

For UCSF, tuition is 12,700 per quarter and with minimum 8 quarters. Tuition comes to $1,04,140 with anticipated 5% increase in tuition.
Insturments are $21,472 .
Total for tuition and instruments for UCSF comes to $125,612
Difference between tuition and instruments fees alone for BU and UCSF comes to $35,748, which means UCSF is 40% more expensive compared to BU. UCSF and UCLA seem to be about same expensive.

 THANK  U  RAJ

hey rajkang,
any idea what the living cost is is in BU per year and what the entire cost of the course might total too. also when u go for a student visa do they expect u to show costs to cover the full course ( tution + living ) or is it just for a year or semester. 😕

simple question.....specially for UPenn students....and BU too.....how long approx will it take to repay the loan.......have not yet been able to see a comment about this?

Oops.. sorry for not looking this up earlier.. honest answer: Don't know. I don't really think about how long its going to take me to repay the loan.. I'll just cross that bridge when I get to it! 😀

bump for anymore 2-3 yr int programs....

i hope there are more....

are there...?

step 1 coming up (and maybe step 2 two months after)!

There is a general misconception here that Upenn is ivy league. For your info it is not.One of the requirement to be in ivy league is to be on east coast(tri state area) and has to be pvt institution, and ofcourse ,lot of other things like having Ivy trees etc.If there was any university in America that was started to compete ivy leagues ,it was only U of chicago. It is not there though. If there is any other university that has reached close to it ,it is STANFORD(CALI),UNC(NC) and RICE (TX).The only reason these universities did not make it is because of their geographical location and UNC is a state uni.Infact, schools like U OF Illinois beats Upenns in terms of education. The simple rationale to use here is that the harder it gets to get in ,the better it is.So ,think with these many international grads ,where do you think Upenn stands.Try ,even talking to the folks at UNC(state),they would let you know what is competition.

i never understood what an ivy league mean..can any one explain?

Main Entry: Ivy League
Function: adjective
1 : of, relating to, or characteristic of a group of long-established eastern U.S. colleges widely regarded as high in scholastic and social prestige
2 : of, relating to, or characteristic of the students of Ivy League colleges

Ivy League
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The Ivy League is a group of eight universities in the northeastern United States. The term Ivy League has connotations of academic excellence as well as a certain amount of elitism. These schools are also sometimes affectionately referred to as "The Ancient Eight."

All of the Ivy League universities share some general characteristics: They are among the most respected, prestigious and well-known universities in the U.S.; they rank within the top one percent of the world's universities in terms of financial endowment; and they attract top-tier students and faculty. The Ivies are also among the oldest universities in the United States?seven of the eight were founded during America's colonial era.

The Ivy League universities are all privately owned and controlled, although many of them receive funding from the federal or state goverments to pursue research. One of the eight, Cornell University, has four state-supported academic units, termed statutory colleges, that are an integral part of the university.

The members of the Ivy League are:

Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island, founded 1764
Columbia University, in New York, New York, founded 1754 as King's College
Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York, founded 1865
Dartmouth College, in Hanover, New Hampshire, founded 1769
Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, college founded 1636, university founded 1780
Princeton University, in Princeton, New Jersey, founded in 1746 as College of New Jersey
University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded 1740
Yale University, in New Haven, Connecticut, founded 1701

thanks for the explaination, but what is the purpose of knowing whether a school is an ivy league or not regarding to foreign trained dentists?

Ivy league schools (and the ones that aren't but act like one) can afford to be as picky as they want with their admisions requirements, because they know "la creme de la creme" of applicants will choose them as their top choice.

So regardless of what program are you joining, they're picky. That's probably why Sam got so many negative comments about this UPenn interview, but still he managed to get in 😀 :luck: . So basically you can't rule them out just 'cause they're ivy league.

Harvard for example won't even take advanced standing students (in dental program) and Columbia requires a minimum of 90 to even take a look at your application.

Also, after you get a degree for one of those schools, that surely boosts up your post graduate application. The name helps.

Got it?

Just curious ,which r the one's which aren't Ivy league but ACT LIKE ONE????? 😉 😕

There are quite a few that act like ivy league.Infact,Upenn med school and the business school are the only tha tis considered ivy league, but still they hold on to the title even if you are applying for regular college.I went through that years back.Same is the case for U OF CHICAGO.Only the business school and med school is on par with ivy,but they still act .But ,then they have the highest number of Nobel laureates than any US university,so goes all the other ones I have mentioned earlier.Infact,on personal tours,I thought Upenn dental school was way behind than Tufts,NYU etc.Its like getting a Harvard dental degree. It is just a regular school ,but the harvard name clicks.Same like John Hopkins,Duke etc.Infact,I personally thought Uconn was an awesome school. There is another way to assess where they stand.Ivy league has certain sports competiton among them .Look for the roster and you will find out who is there and who is not there. At,the end of the day ,it dont matter if you come out of any school, unless you are planning to write a book or something,or aim for Nobel prize. If you pay close attnetion ,they dont call it Ivy league Uni,it is referred to as Ivy league schools. So,not all the schools in a ivy league uni are upto it.Trust me on this,my father is an ivy league grad.So ,like anything else ,dont trust all that you read.America is all about packaging and selling.
