Is it true that if you can reregister for the USMLE on the NBME website, then you failed and if you can't you passed?

If you think it through, that can't be a true rumor. You have not addressed the third case, "the test has yet to be graded/entered". If it lets you register during this third case, you can't trust the "fail" result. If it doesn't let you register during that time, you can't trust the "pass" result.

What is this, biostats?

No, just a programming background. Everything makes more sense to me when divided up into cases.

So biostats must be easy for you. Get 'em tiger.

You are right in essence, that the trick does not work, but you're not exactly right, because you are assuming that the process remains the same before and after your score is released. As someone who recently went through this process, let me tell you what happens. Before your score has been released, you will not be allowed to reregister because you still have an open registration for the exam. Therefore, it will not tell you pass/fail based on this, because it is very clearly telling you that you can't register for your exam because your exam has not been "completed."

This all changes once your score has been released (when you have a score release date when you check on the NBME website). Once your score has been released, it seems that you are allowed to reregister for Step 1 regardless of whether you passed or failed. I passed and was allowed to reregister for the Step 1 the day that my score was reported; I thought I had failed and was miserable until I found out otherwise. I can still reregister for it now, almost a month later. I did some research on this and found a number of similar reports -- for US students, the so-called OASIS trick does not work at all for this reason. Take-home message: this trick does not work, and only causes misery. Don't do it!

I was just allowed to reregister even though i have not yet recieved a score report release date, and it does say that i have completed the exam. What does that mean? Did i fail? Ahh!

Haku, read the post directly above yours. It answers your question.

A more reliable way is to look at your score report.

Thanks OSUdoc..you're so funny. I was going to do nursing actually, according to a career survey that was my perfect match...but unfortunately i somehow got into med school so i figured i may as well give it a shot. The people who go the farthest in life are the ones who failed the most, so what is one bad test anyway. I just want to know so I can start studying again. Thanks again though for your smart comment, you must be proud of yourself.

Start studying again whenever you have an exam in your first clinical rotation.

If you are convinced that you failed the USMLE, then start studying now. It shouldn't be relevant if you passed it or not, since you need to know this information for clinical rotations anyway.
