Hi everyone, I am kind of in the process of requesting LORs for the upcoming cycle, and I am having trouble deciding what to do about the schools that require a letter from a chem professor.

So, here's my problem...my gen chem 1 & 2 classes were huge (100-200 people), and I never really got to know the professors (but I earned A's in both). The only other chem classes I've had are organic 1 & 2...and organic 1 was another huge class where the professor didn't know me, and organic 2 was a small class (40ish people) where the professor knew me very well, but I struggled for a C in the class. I feel like I shouldn't be sending in LORs from professors whose classes I didn't do very well in, but I also feel weird asking professors who I am certain will not know who the heck I am aside from my grades.

Thanks anyone who can lend some helpful advice. 🙂

I suggest getting the LOR from the class you got the best grade in, even if you don't know the teacher well. Most likely the professor will ask you to come in and talk with him, at which time you can tell him about yourself, your career goals, and provide him with an extensive resume and possibly a transcript. This should be enough information for him to write a good rec for you. Professors get LOR requests from students they taught but don't personally know all the time.

Are you going through a health committee at your school or just getting individual LORs?

what about bioCHEM?

I'm not taking it until fall. And apparently we don't have a committee, so looks like I'll be doing individual letters.

100-200 is considered small...my "big" was 1000+ and they said flatout that they will not write a letter under any circumstance.

Just ask. Maybe they will say 'come talk to me for 3 hours and then I will write it.' Who knows?

I'm not taking it until fall. And I'm in the process of finding out if we have a pre-health committee, but no one is returning calls/emails yet... :/

See them in person. And if they delay writing, go everyday till it's written unless you want them to submit it in Jan...
