This is really random, but I noticed there are a LOT of chemE's out there, especially since it's kind of non-traditional. So, being one myself, I'm curious as to how you all decided on medicine. And, if that decision was made during college, before, or after. Thanks.

I chose ChE to be different and standout among a sea of Bio and chem applicants but I dont think that adcoms really give you as much credit for a very difficult degree as you might think. That and there are many more ChE applicants than I originally thought there would be. I had six in my graduating class of around forty. Good news was three of six got in with MCAT scores ranging from 27-31. I Graduated with a 3.5 overall and 3.3 BCPM which is on the low end for many schools. GPA would have been higher in a different major due to the course load ChE requires. I got rejected last year but had a very low MCAT at a 25. I retook and got a 33 so maybe this is my year. Good Luck.

Did you decide on medicine before majoring in ChemE? The bizarre thing is that AMCAS counts most of my engineering classes as not part of my BCPM, so my overall is actually lower than my BCPM. Did they count your engineering credits as part of BCPM?

Sorry for all the questions, I just find it so odd that so many Cheme's would choose medicine after a BS. I would've thought most would pick grad school or field work. 😕

When I filled out my application AMCAS made me specify the course type such as BY,PH,MA, or CH. There was also a category for ENG so I dont think they count into the BCPM though I think they should since engineering requires applied knowledge of Chem, Phys, and Math. My GPA in engineering was a 3.45 so it would help a little with my BCPM.

I graduated with a ChemE degree and my BCPM is definitely higher than my overall! I didn't decide to go into medicine until after I graduated, but I knew that I didn't want to be a ChemE by the time my senior year rolled around. Lots of ChemE's at my school end up going into medicine. Funny how that all works out. 🙂
